Hi All,
I have a problem with Windows 8.1 that I hope someone can help me with.

Bought a new Acer laptop that I would like to run Ubuntu alongside Windows. However Windows has a problem I would like to clear up first.
Seems Windows 8.1. does not shut down fully (part of their “Quick Start Programming“ holding settings etc in Ram (I think )) and this drains the battery in about 24hrs completely voiding any benefit. Windows of course deny they have a problem but some PC manufacturers have put out fixes for there own products (haven’t found anything for Acer).
Hope someone can point me in the right direction or give a fix for this.
Not sure what would happen if I install Ubuntu whilst this problem is present.

Cheers,
Dave

Have you tried Disabling Hibernation all together so that it completely shutsdown instead.

If it's flattening the batery in 24 hours then it's going into "suspend" mode not "hibernation".
Two options:
  1. change the action on the power button - so that it actually powers off
  2. switch the button action to hibernate. gives faster restart advantage but no power usage
(caveat-emptor this experience is from a Sony Vaio not an Acer :)

If he uses hibernation in dual boot, he will only reboot into the last used OS instead of getting the boot menu.

hm - that's not my experience.

I dual boot vista and ubuntu and can have both hibernated as grub gets in between somehow ... but i noticed somewhere along the line the boot process has changed in recent Ubuntu releases so maybe no longer works.

so in his Dave's case maybe full power off is the only option :(

Yeah Guys, I have tried all the various power settings, disabling sleep/hibernation. Thinking of reverting to Windows 8 (Not 8.1) fresh re-install. Seems a lot of people are having trouble with the 8.1 upgrade. My wife bought same laptop at the time I bought this one so will see how it performs straight out of the box.
I thought maybe someone might know how to overcome the problem, BIOS settings or such. From what I can recall the battery drained a bit right from the start but is worse since upgrade. I thought it was a dud battery and Acer are sending me a new one but since have proved it is not the battery (can remove it fully charged and it holds charge full charge over a couple of days).

I did wonder if installing Ubuntu would fix the problem anyway being that the BIOS is altered to suit dual boot (not that knowledgeable on BIOS).
I’ll try Hibernation as Vince suggests and see how that goes (thought hibernation would use power).
Have read the term “Deep Sleep mode” somewhere and I think this is where the Laptop is shutting down to but can’t find any settings for this on the computer.

If that doesn’t work I’ll do the reinstall (bugger, just got it all set up the way I wanted and kicked out all the Trashware) if the wife’s lappy holds the charge.
