Greetings!
Dr. Jared Diamond, in his book "Collapse," talks about the tooth
filing when discussing Viking interactions in Greenland and the New
World. It seems that they may have picked that up from the Northeastern
indians that kicked them off of the North American Continent. He points
out that there is no society around the Vikings, or with whom they had
contact with in the old world, that practiced such a custom, but the
Indians they encountered did. He also points out the limited number of
people who did file their teeth, and the fact that it was done by young
warriors, plus the time in which it occured, points to the custom being
"imported" from the new world.
It was published in 2005.
Using the words of the intelligence community, "Confidence is high"
that this is an imported, New World custom.
