In the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci, Jansen trained as a physicist, then became a painter, before focusing his attention on sculpture. He has applied his background in both art and science to create over 30 self-propelled Strandbeests that utilize wind power to walk in a startlingly lifelike fashion. Originally conceived as a solution to address the threat of flooding caused by rising sea levels, Jansen envisioned the Strandbeests as wind-powered creatures roaming the beaches, pushing and piling sand on the shore to form natural barriers.

The first experience I had with the Italian fear of wind came after a gym workout with the host mom for whom I was au pairing. We both took showers, and she emerged with her hair dry. I knew we were tight for time, but I had a case of grease-head so I had done a thorough wash. I'm accustomed to walking outside while my hair air-dries, so I grabbed my stuff and met my mamma at the door. She looked at my wet hair with a horrified face. "Go blow-dry your hair, the wind will make you sick!" So I did. I've since come to recognize neck scarves in hot July and closed air vents as signs of fear for the colpo d'aria. Literally translated, colpo d'aria means a "whack of air." Culturally translated, it is the movement of air that causes a myriad of sicknesses in Italy and other European countries. When I was working in Tuscany last summer, one of my European co-leaders, and dear friend, woke up one morning unable to move her neck. Stiff as a brick. It was severe enough that she took a train to Florence to see a doctor. The cause, he said? You guessed it: colpo d'aria! Everyone was sure. Stretch, massage and stay out of the wind!

Coming from a Missouri upbringing where we ran ceiling fans and air conditioning from June to September, this colpo d'aria pill was tough for me to swallow. You can imagine, however, that if you believe the wind causes immobile necks, the flu and colds, you're going to feel strongly about protecting yourself against it. As all Backroads leaders passing through Tuscany live together, a relentless battle began between those who believed in the colpo d'aria and those who were well adapted to an air-conditioned life. Let me just say that Tuscany is HOT in the summer. The sun sizzles, and we regularly experience temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. In true Italian style, our Backroads leader apartments in Tuscany do not have air conditioning. Instead, they are well-equipped with floor fans from the local hardware store. I couldn't get enough air; I tried to point the fan directly at my face during the night. This worked perfectly when I had a European roommate who wanted nothing to do with the wind. However, when we shared a fan-less hotel room during a trip, decisions about air conditioning became complicated. I am a hot-blooded human being. I start sweating in May and don't stop until October. It's a testament to the fervor with which my co-leaders believe in the evils of wind that I adapted to sleeping in warm rooms.

Apodiacula is one of the tallest Strandbeests created by Jansen. It has striking protruding beams that work as outriggers, giving Apodiacula stability in strong winds and allowing it to walk without toppling over.

Burchus Primus is an unusual Strandbeest, adopting a completely different form and function to its wind-powered cousins. Rather than being driven by the wind, it is pulled across the beach by people. It looks like a caterpillar both in appearance and movement. Its new style of walking allowed for better manoeuvring on rough and uneven sand.

When my dress was finished, I skipped upstairs to my grandfather's kitchen to show him my handiwork. Instead of the effusive praise I expected, he was strangely quiet. He asked how I knew how to use the sewing machine and who showed me the pattern. I told him I saw the pattern in my head and somehow just knew how to wind the bobbin and thread the machine.

But despite their blustery reputations, none of these famously windy cities has honored the wind gods with a museum dedicated to the wind. For that, you have to travel to the magical city of Trieste, the architecturally stunning seaport in northeast Italy at the head of the Adriatic, tucked inside the Slovenian border. The city James Joyce called home for 11 years.

Our research showed that the most common peak autumn colors were around the 15th-25th of October, so we planned our trip within this window. Lucky for us, these dates ended up working out perfectly this year and we arrived to an incredible display of color that lasted throughout our stay.

I found myself reaching for the below outer layers almost everyday of our trip. Some days the cold lows plus icy wind chill even had me layering every single one haha. Most importantly, I would ensure you have at least one warm insulation layer and one waterproof layer for adventure we went on.

Abstract:Renewable energy plays an important role in the transition to a low emission society, yet in many regions energy projects have resulted in increasing societal polarization. Based on a comprehensive literature review and a survey among stakeholders from specific regions in Germany, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Poland and Spain with little prior experience with wind energy, we highlight six categories of factors that shape community acceptance of onshore wind energy development: technical characteristics of wind energy projects, environmental impacts, economic impacts, societal impacts, contextual factors and individual characteristics. We identify key similarities in acceptance-related patterns of wind energy development across the selected regions, but also important differences, highlighting the very context-specific nature of community acceptance. The findings contribute to improving the understanding of the forces, factors and relationships at play between policy frameworks and perceptions of wind energy under different conditions. We conclude by proposing policy recommendations regarding measures to increase the positive impacts and reduce the negative impacts of wind energy projects, and to strengthen existing drivers and reduce barriers to community acceptance of wind energy development. Keywords: wind energy; social acceptance; community acceptance; stakeholder consultation; barriers; drivers; climate; environment; economy; society

Nelson instructs that both breeds need plenty of mental stimulation and physical exercise. If not, you can expect boredom or destructive behavior. However, she believes the IG might have more energy than the Whippet. She describes the IG as a little wind-up toy and says they stay playful and whimsical puppies into adulthood.

When we visited Venice in January, we had it all: lots of previous experience in the city, fluent Italian, and an iPad with GPS-style Google maps. We still got lost. Constantly. Basically, imagine the confusing, winding, medieval streets of the centro storico in Rome or Florence and add the frequent obstacle of a canal blocking your path.

Take the winding SP12 road southwest toward Lake Bolsena in the region of Lazio. Before you reach the terminus of the hill-town road trip, make a pit stop at the majestic town of Civita di Bagnoregio, 13 miles from Orvieto.

March indicates the end of winter, especially by the coast, as wild flowers start to bloom in abundance and the temperatures begin to rise. Lovely sunny days alternate with windy, rainy days and the highest peaks of Etna, Nebrodi and Madonie are still covered in snow.

During the winter season from November through March, the Blue Grotto is generally closed due to high winds and rough seas, which make it impossible to pass through the low mouth of the cave. On days when weather and sea conditions are mild, the grotto may open in the morning hours to the public. You can request up-to-date information about opening times at the port, or call +39 081 837 06 86 (Azienda Turistica di Capri).

Opening hours: each day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with favorable sea conditions (in case of certain high winds, the cave mouth is inaccessible). The grotto is closed to visitors during rough seas or high winds, and it's always closed on December 25th and January 1st.

In case of strong winds or rough seas, entrance to the grotto will be suspended; often, the grotto will open and close a number of times on the same day when the weather is unstable. Unfortunately, it's hard to forecast closures due to weather, though if the weather forecast reports rough seas, the grotto will probably be closed. To check on up-to-date closures, call the Motoscafisti di Capri pier at 081 8375646 after 9 am.

In case of mild weather, the Blue Grotto is open during the winter months. That said, the grotto is often closed between November and the beginning of March due to adverse weather conditions. If you are visiting during the winter, you can check up-to-date closures at the Marina Grande port by asking at the ticket windows for Laser Capri (Pier 21) or Motoscafisti di Capri (Pier 0), or by calling the Motoscafisti di Capri pier at 081 8375646 after 9 am. If both ticket offices are closed and no one answers the telephone, the grotto is closed.

Notes: Cash only. Closed on December 25th and January 1st. In case of wind and rough sea it is not possible to enter the Grotto, to verify that it is open we advise you to call the Motoscafisti di Capri pier at 081 8375646 from 9 a.m. . Swimming in the Grotto is forbidden.

Southern Europe is tipped by analysts to become an increasingly key region for offshore wind expansion thanks to major plans for deepwater floating projects off Spain, Portugal and Italy itself.

Spring in the Cinque Terre means cooler weather for hiking and slightly thinner crowds. In the summer months, this region is a haven for swimming and boating, but it's super hot and super crowded. Winter sees things wind down in the Cinque Terre. Hotels and many restaurants close, but there are apartment rentals for the adventurous and romantic.
