Hello Everyone,

One of my close relatives recently completed BE Mech and joined as a "machine operator" in nearby (Chennai) automotive manufacturer. I thought a BE graduate deserves a better job. Request you to please see if you could help him. His profile is attached with this mail.

Best Regards,
Eswaran

Hi Eswaran,

Will try to do something about it....

In the meantime, its highly imperative for budding engineers to come out their colleges as Engineers!!!

Most of the guys do not have basic knowledge in their chosen discipline, with TN alone churning out close to 1.75 Lakh engineers, hardly 5000 Engineers would come close to the expectations of Corporate...

Its a pity that we do not have good faculty in all the Engg colleges, not to mention BRAND Coleges which offer best faculty to students; added with this is the callous and casual approach to Education by today's youngsters....

The norm today is, if you are incapable of being placed through Campus interview than its an uphill task to place oneself thro outside opportunities.....

Bu the way, my cousin also was placed as machinist in Reno, For your info please....

If boys are not willing to give their best to acquire the best during their course, they can not expect the best from Corporate....this is the writing on the wall!!!

Best wishes,

David Appollo.D

Dear Eswaran

Although it is paining to note that a B.E (Mech) is placed as a Machine Operator, I would blame the system that made it happen. As rightly put by David, only 2 to 3% of the Engineers come out with a Knowledge and Information that can be applied to Industrial projects as qualified Engineers in Tamil Nadu. We can not totally blame the students but the system that has allowed to infiltrate in engineering education so pathetically. David would also appreciate that to get an Engineering seat 25 years ago and that too from MIT is almost equivalent to "Milking a Bull". In my class, open quota had only 3 students, all University rank holders from Chennai, Coimbatore and Tirunelveli, a total of 18 students in Production Technology. The teaching was excellent and the competition and the learning environment was fierce and invigorating. I graduated in 1985 from the 6th batch :- T,No 06506. If the basic knowledge is strong, I would suggest him to pursue higher studies in an allied field that could complement Mechanical into IT area, so he will have a better chance of getting a placement that can utilise his skills and knowledge.

In Australia, we do not tend to interview any Engineers other than that come out of reputed Institutions from Tamil Nadu that prevailed in 1980s DOTE, Guindy, PSG and IITs. We know the standard of other institutions and the students at the age of 25 put in their CVs unrealistic and unimaginable experiences...all cooked up. I migrated in 1990 and since then I completed Masters in IE&M, Info Tech and MBA. Learning has to continue to suit the needs of the modern world...otherwise you will be totally lost in the competitive environment. No wonder many so called Engineers are unemployed, we have made engineers out of nowhere and each and every household has got engineers !!! Pathetic.

Best wishes and Good day

Thank you David, Somesh and Nagesh for responding to my request. I would agree with you that the "education/teaching as a service" has transformed to "education/teaching as a business" these days. But, these folks too should move on with their life. This relative of mine is determined to complete his BE after his diploma.  So, I would say every bit of help from this group will be rewarding his career.

Best Regards,
Eswaran
