Then starting from one corner of the wall, I added the right combination of base cabinets according to the length of the wall and how I would use the cabinets. (Eg. a pull out cabinet for sauces and condiments to the left of my stove, drawers for cutlery in the kitchen island) Did the same for the wall cabinets. When I had a rough idea of how it should go I was ready to plan online.

The kitchen planning project has had (and will continue to have) several stages, of which we are just in the early phases. I have a feeling this renovation will become The "massive project we will always remember, but be so happy it's done."

First, is the dreamy stage, and mass accumulation of Pinteresting ideas and Houzz-worthy photos, saving brochures (the Miele and LBL ones are just so pretty to look at), and tearing, saving, and posting beautiful kitchen remodels articles from the likes of Dwell, AD, Interior Design (Eichler cover feature!) and Atomic Ranch.

So this past weekend, we decided to bite the bullet and make the trip to Ikea to really get the planning underway. Big win; we decided to go on a Friday night after work when Ikea was relatively empty and the Kitchen planning Sales people were just sitting around chatting. This trip was just to get confirmation of what cabinets we wanted to go with and how the sizing works. We survived the trip (with two kids in tow - we should have fed them first not last, but I was so ready to get to the kitchens that I made the poor choice to feed later). We will soon go back to make the final purchases and take advantage of their big Kitchen Sale. Next time, I'll stick with Friday night, sans kiddos.

And inspired by the famous Faith's Kitchen Remodel on the Kitchn (which I consider a bookmark/must-read for any kitchen renovation, detailing the entire process, including pricing) we are inspired to see what some custom doors from Semihandmadedoors will cost us. I am utterly wowed by their beautifully crafted wood veneer doors, designed specifically for Ikea cabinetry.

A few years ago, I designed my first IKEA kitchen and then renovated and installed the whole thing. It was a TON of work, but I love how it turned out! I really enjoyed so many parts of doing an IKEA kitchen! Plus, the quality and look were great too.

Well, my sister, who currently lives in England, is moving back to Utah! And she asked me to help makeover the kitchen on her house using IKEA cabinets! Of course, I said yes! This time, as I do it all over again, I thought I would document some tips on how to design an IKEA kitchen and install it so I might help someone else who is trying to DIY the own kitchen design too!

How do I Measure My Kitchen Accurately for IKEA Cabinets?
When measuring your kitchen, draw as detailed of diagrams as you can. Not only is this helpful to reference as you build your design in the IKEA Home Planner, but creating the diagrams helps you become more familiar with the space as well. But for each wall where cabinetry will be, there are 3 numbers you need to have in mind:

Make the Kitchen For You
The final point, but probably the most important, is that this is your kitchen. Renovate it for you! We receive hundreds of questions every day about space planning and the questions are often so specific to an individual. Some of these questions might include:

Love this, so much useful info in this post. I am currently planning my Ikea kitchen in a new build, with very similar layout. I have been struggling with the corner, not wanting to waste the space by using the wall cabinet on top of the corner unit, which is what I assume you did there. I like the aesthetic of that cabinet with drawer combo, though and really love the toast station idea! Thank you for helping me actually see the idea I have played around with in the Ikea software.

I am helping my family with their Ikea kitchen and I was wondering which drawer system do you use? I have see a lot of negative reviews about the cheaper Forvara and everybody says to go with Maximera.

Yes! When we installed our IKEA kitchen a year and a half ago the closest store was two hours away. Not only did they deliver, but they did so free of charge because of a special they were running at the time. We love our kitchen!

When doing custom cabinet configurations for your kitchen you will want to plan ahead to cut down on work. If you have multiple matching IKEA cabinet boxes that have the same or similar custom internal configurations: you will want to do your full custom configuration and then duplicate the item.

We went to IKEA to schedule a time for our kitchen planning service. You can do it online, but we wanted to look at the store displays, so we were there anyway. They had 2 or 3 time slots on each day of the weekend that we could schedule. We were told we needed to plan to be there for the entire 2 hour time. For us, that meant hiring a babysitter for at least 3 hours.

Our kitchen planner started by quickly reviewing our kitchen plan to make sure everything would work. She asked questions and clarified our plan then gave suggestions for improvements. She added side panels so that the cabinets that had side showing would look finished. She took out the lighting options that the software automatically adds. And she even gave some innovative suggestions, like adding a fourth drawer below the microwave because we had the space.

Our kitchen planner was very friendly and helpful. She talked with us, not at us. Plus, we met in an enclosed room, instead of standing next to a computer on the salesroom floor and trying to talk over the noise. The experience was very good.

Our planner did give us a good tip for when to come back in, though. In the mornings, IKEA is busy with contractors ordering kitchens. In the evenings is when most homeowners come in to order. So, early afternoons are the best time to get help in the IKEA kitchen department and to order a kitchen.

We paid $59 for delivery when we ordered the kitchen. We also bought a mattress at the same time and had it delivered with the kitchen for no extra cost. The IKEA associate told us approximately what day the delivery would happen when we ordered and found out the exact day and four-hour time range a day or so before everything was delivered.

About two weeks later, someone from our local store called to confirm the parts we needed. He read off the names of the parts, instead of giving their numbers, and they sounded right. I wish I had taken a few minutes to look at my original order and confirmed they were correct because I only had the part numbers on my inventory list. A few days later, 3 of the 5 replacement parts arrived. So, we called again, gave our case number, and a couple of weeks later, the final 2 part arrived. Luckily, we were still a month away from installing our kitchen.

Demolishing a 60 year-old kitchen was a lot more work than putting in a new one. But the most time-consuming part of our kitchen remodel was repairing walls and preparing the room for the new cabinets. That and planning and installing new lighting and electrical.

This wonderful blog is about the kitchen services review. Here the tips and tricks for addressing such are mentioned. Such content must be made more and more available. Thank you for this article! This is really very informative.

I am trying to plan a new IKEA kitchen with their online planner. When I put in cabinets next to the stove, I get a warning message: "The minimum safety distances around the cooker are not met" and there is a diagram showing that there must be a minimum of 20 mm between the stove and the adjacent cabinets. I went into IKEA today and their showroom kitchens do not show this clearance. Also, I asked a clerk and she said, "Oh, don't worry about that". She didn't have an explanation as to why I shouldn't worry about it when the software was clearly telling me to worry about it. Has anyone else had this experience?

The size and positioning of the kitchen island was one of those decisions that I took a long time over, it had to be right. I wanted it to be as big as possible but also not to be overpowering for the space, allowing us to have room for a dining table the other side. Working this out with a shell of a room was really tricky, so my advice here would be to mark it out on the floor with chalk. I wanted the island to be 1200mm wide and 2400mm long, but I also needed 1000mm for the gap between the island and the opposite units, and then 2500mm the other side for a table. Luckily we just about have this space available so we went for a 1200mm x 2460mm kitchen island in the end.

One of the best things about IKEA METOD kitchens are all of the storage options that are available once the kitchen is fitted. The storage options are not something that you add to your overall kitchen order, instead these are items that you pick yourself from the showroom or the warehouse.

As you know anything that you buy from IKEA arrives in flatpack boxes, so be prepared for hundreds of boxes to arrive and so much cardboard! We must have had about 200 boxes turn up, plus thousands of other bits like hinges and drawer runners, and I still have loads of these left over. Because we were living at home during our renovation obviously space was really tight so it was a matter of ordering the kitchen only when we needed it delivering. The delivery only took about 5 working days from order which is great.

Our builders put together all the carcasses and installed them into the kitchen. My one tip here is to make sure that they have the plan, talk them through the plan, give them the order list from IKEA so that they can check what is what and where it is going. Also make sure that you check the delivery yourself against the original order list. Sounds simple, but when there are hundreds of boxes and a building site, it can get quite complex.

Wow! I love how you maximize the table over there to become a storage at the same time. Now I got an idea how to reorganize my kitchen. Thanks for your great post and looking forward to more similar articles.
