The survey also finds there is no clear consensus among teens about the effect that social media has on the lives of young people today. Minorities of teens describe that effect as mostly positive (31%) or mostly negative (24%), but the largest share (45%) says that effect has been neither positive nor negative.
When it comes to which one of these online platforms teens use the most, roughly one-third say they visit Snapchat (35%) or YouTube (32%) most often, while 15% say the same of Instagram. By comparison, 10% of teens say Facebook is their most-used online platform, and even fewer cite Twitter, Reddit or Tumblr as the site they visit most often.
Given the opportunity to explain their views in their own words, teens who say social media has had a mostly positive effect tended to stress issues related to connectivity and connection with others. Some 40% of these respondents said that social media has had a positive impact because it helps them keep in touch and interact with others. Many of these responses emphasize how social media has made it easier to communicate with family and friends and to connect with new people:
There is slightly less consensus among teens who say social media has had a mostly negative effect on people their age. The top response (mentioned by 27% of these teens) is that social media has led to more bullying and the overall spread of rumors.
Some 95% of teens now say they have or have access to a smartphone, which represents a 22-percentage-point increase from the 73% of teens who said this in 2014-2015. Smartphone ownership is nearly universal among teens of different genders, races and ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Overall, 84% of teens say they have or have access to a game console at home, and 90% say they play video games of any kind (whether on a computer, game console or cellphone). While a substantial majority of girls report having access to a game console at home (75%) or playing video games in general (83%), those shares are even higher among boys. Roughly nine-in-ten boys (92%) have or have access to a game console at home, and 97% say they play video games in some form or fashion.
A teenage girl who was raped in her own home while her mother was forced to watch has described how she now sleeps with a hammer in her bedroom to feel safe at night. Joshua Carney, 28, from Cardiff forced his way into the home of his two victims on March 1, 2022, just five days after being released on licence for a spate of burglaries in 2017.
Cardiff Crown Court heard on Monday how he subjected both the mother and daughter to repeated brutal and degrading rapes over a 15-minute period which Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke called "the stuff of nightmares". Carney, a career criminal with 47 previous offences to his name, knocked on the door of the house just before 7am in a "dishevelled and chaotic" state. As soon as she saw him the woman, referred to as "mother" by Judge Lloyd-Clarke during the sentencing, "knew he was danger". He was described by Ieuan Bennett, acting for the prosecution, as having no shoes, blood coming from both heels, and clearly in an intoxicated state.
After pushing the woman back into her home and locking the door behind them both Carney asked her who else was in the house and whether she had a boyfriend. Terrified he was going to hurt her and desperate to keep him away from her sleeping daughter upstairs she pleaded with him to stay downstairs with her.
Carney started hitting her and punching her in the head. Her screams woke up her daughter who immediately locked her bedroom door and called the police. Mr Bennett described the "harrowing" transcript from that call at 6.52am. The girl told the call handler: "I can't see her, I can hear her crying, I think he's stabbed her." Later she told police that as she realised something "terrible" was happening, it caused her to "physically gag" in her bedroom.
Threatening to kill the mother Carney shouted at her to "stop f****** screaming or I'm going to stab you". Fearful he'd use a knife in the nearby kitchen to carry out his threat she tried to follow his instructions. He pushed her into the living room before ordering her to take her clothes off and orally raping her by forcing his penis into her mouth. At one point during her first ordeal he demanded that she call him her husband.
Calling his remarks during the attack as "odd and disturbing" Mr Bennett said Carney called out: "Tell me I'm your husband." Afterwards, he dragged the woman out of the living room and said: "Come on, let's go upstairs." Begging him to leave her daughter alone and to stay with her downstairs the woman managed to break free and get to the locked front door. But her hands were shaking so much she was unable to unlock it in time and Carney started punching her again and repeated his threats saying: "Do that again and I will f****** stab you."
Carney then told her she was going to go upstairs with him and trying to steer him away from her daughter she led him into her own bedroom where he pushed her onto the bed and orally raped her again. Mr Bennett told the court: "He then said: 'Get your daughter. Which room is your daughter in?'." The woman told him: "Do whatever you want to me but please leave her alone."
Forcing his way into the teen's bedroom the cowering schoolgirl was confronted by a naked Carney who grabbed her mobile phone and realised she'd called the police. He ordered both women into the first bedroom where he slapped the young girl in the face and orally raped her mum in front of her.
Then he turned to the daughter and Mr Bennett said: "She knew he was then going to turn on her daughter." Carney then raped the young girl. He repeated his "odd phraseology" during the assaults saying: "I'm your husband, tell me I'm your husband", Mr Bennett said. All the while the mum held on to her daughter's hand trying to reassure her and comfort her as the attack took place.
As he returned downstairs to retrieve his clothes there were blue flashing lights outside the house belonging to the police who had attended the scene following the earlier 999 call. Terrified she and her daughter would be taken hostage inside the mother led Carney out the back door and into the garden telling him he could escape out the back. She rattled the key in the lock hoping to attract police attention. When the gate opened there were two police officers waiting and she simply mouthed silently: "Please take him, I beg you, he's raped us both."
Carney was obviously intoxicated and was formally arrested at the scene. Officers described him as having slurred speech and shouting at them: "What are you doing?" He admitted he'd taken spice and later claimed in his police interview that he had no memory of what had happened. He had been released from custody on licence just five days before.
Both females were taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Heath, Cardiff, where they were subjected to emergency examinations. Neither suffered any internal injuries but the teenager was terrified she could have an unwanted pregnancy. She was also haunted by the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted disease and told her mother: "If the tests came back to show that I was pregnant or caught a disease I did not want to know, I just wanted to be given medication for whatever it was to make it go away without telling me."
