In my daily use of Excel, I rarely use the Excel Ribbon menu (in fact, I hide it so I gain extra screen space). I leverage the keyboard shortcuts, the Quick Access Toolbar and different add-ins to eliminate steps.

For the one person who'll read this, please add your most frequented excel shortcuts, and own collection/links of Excel Add-Ins/Macros/Tools in the comments down below. That way when any new WSO users search for "Excel Tips" they can find and bookmark this.

This. I cannot stress enough how great this addin is. Easily dump everything under the sun into customizeable templates. Nothing beats going to the Q or K as a source, but if you need lots of information in excel for a competitive set and fast, there is nothing like this tool. Highly recommend.

Hi, sorry for being such a noob, but how often do you need to gather data from the fed? And what sort of data do you typically use? I know my summer internship MD mentioned I will be updating spreadsheets with up to date data, and I am just wondering if this add-in would help in some cases.

Timesaver is an excel based tool developed by Fin-Wiser Advisory and include functionalities which can help excel users to increase their productivity and save time on a number of tasks performed in excel.

Power-user is one of the most popular add-ins for PowerPoint and Excel. It includes an impressive number of tools enhancing productivity and helping create visually appealing presentations and efficient spreadsheets. For example:

Ultimate Dashboard Tool is an Excel add-in that helps you use your workbooks for visual representation of your data. The Ultimate Dashboard Tool will allow you to create waterfall charts, gauges, traffic lights, treemaps, frequency distribution and other charts. A selection of its options are shown below:

The examples above are just a few among the hundreds of add-ins you can find. But it should give you a broad overview of the potential of these tools. Anyone can customize their experience with Microsoft Office and adjust their working environment to their own individual needs. Which add-ins would you recommend? Please tell us about them in the Comments section below.

Boost is an Excel add-in that provides a suite of time-saving keyboard shortcuts, formatting, and auditing tools designed specifically for people who build financial models in Excel.Boost is used widely by investment bankers, consultants, private equity, and other finance professionals. Some of Boost's most popular features include:Connecting routine tasks in Excel to custom shortcuts;Adding the Excel 2003 menu to the Excel 2007 and 2010 ribbon;Easily break up complicated formulas and trace precedent and dependent cells;Automatically color cells based on custom settings.Requirements:

User-defined functions that are programmed in C or C++ and that use the C API (XLL add-in functions) generally perform faster than user-defined functions that are developed by using VBA or Automation (XLA or Automation add-ins). For more information, see Developing Excel 2010 XLLs.

User-defined functions in Automation add-ins (Excel 2002 and later versions) don't incur the Visual Basic Editor overhead because they don't use the integrated editor. Other performance characteristics of Visual Basic 6 user-defined functions in Automation add-ins are similar to VBA functions.

Application.EnableEvents Turn off events. If Application.EnableEvents is set to False, Excel does not raise events. If there are add-ins listening for Excel events, those add-ins consume resources on the computer as they record the events. If it is not necessary for the add-in to record the events that occur while your code runs, turning off events improves performance.

With the global shift towards remote work, MS Teams has proved itself a robust remote work tool. Microsoft encapsulates many excellent in-built features. But you can further improve the collaboration tool with integrations.

AttendanceBot is an excellent Microsoft Teams add-on, especially for remote teams. It is a simple clock in and clocks out function that can monitor when you start and end work. Further, you can track the following:

easily embed mind maps or shopfloor layouts, an Excel calendar date picker, a free Excel add-in to get free data, translate Excel function names, create your custom Lambda function, add QR codes to Excel, automate Excel to Word file creation, create cool Excel map charts and many more.

I think that the most useful customisation that I utilise frequently is some code I found that allows multiple items to be selected from a data validation list. For example one workbook we use lists the business drivers for a project. Another uses this technique to select the staff involved in a particular project. See -multiple-items-from-excel-data-validation-list/

Thank you again for another great podcast! I always learn something from your podcast/Blog/site. I can't believe I never bothered to look at setting the number of sheets excel creates when you open a New workbook. That will save me time everyday!

also maybe worth mentioning creating default workbook/worksheet 'styles' - to do this create a workbook with the formats you want (fonts, page setup, # of sheets, etc) and save it to your excel start folder with the name BOOK (use SHEET for the sheet template). From then on all new books/sheets will have the same basic formatting

I really like your podcast. I will appreciate if you continue to do podcast in the future.
Regarding my customize of excel, I usually keep lot of commands in Quick Access Toolbars (QAT), esp, insert/delete sheet row, insert/delete sheet column, copy, cut, format copying, paste, paste special, paste value, Font color, Fill color, camera tool and open recent file etc. Also I click on click on Developer tab so that it is visible on my tabs.
When I was studying MBA, I used to do add-ins of Analysis Toolpak but I have not used that Toolpak since I completed MBA.

Thank you Chandoo, very useful.
I have done 3 things to customize my excel,
Created a new tab and put in it all my frequently used commands.
Recorded all my repeated activities as macros and I am running this everyday.
Added the commands I use very very frequently (including the recorded macros) to the QAT.
Thank you again

Thanks for the excellent podcast. I regularly visit your website and have listened to all your podcast which are very informative. I customise my toolbar by using a quick access and inserting icons in toolbar.

Anaplan connection to MS Excel is limited to 1mil cells only. This considerably limits as to what we can do with auto update of data straight from Anaplan to MS Excel. Removing the ceiling on cell count will really boost the efficiency for data analysis.

A further step to boost the functionalities of Excel is to include add-ins. These are external programs which you can integrate into Excel to improve its functionality. Google Sheets makes use of a huge library of add-ins to supplement its more lightweight core functionalities.

Excel performance can be impacted by large file sizes, complex calculations, and inefficient spreadsheet structure. Other factors, such as hardware limitations, corrupted Excel files, outdated software, or conflicting add-ins, could also impede its functionality.

However, unnecessary formatting is volatile. While this might not be obvious when dealing with smaller datasets, its impact becomes very noticeable with a big spreadsheet or when applied extensively. While this formatting tool is undeniably useful, apply it thoughtfully and sparingly to avoid a slow excel spreadsheet.

Array formulas, while powerful and versatile, often come at the cost of speed. They excel at processing and analyzing large amounts of data, but this requires significant processing time, which can slow down your workbook.

To improve performance with a large excel file size or a large excel sheet, try the following tips: limit the use of complex formulas, minimize the number of references to other worksheets, and reduce the size of images. Turning off unnecessary features such as auto-save, real-time collaboration, and screen updating might also help.

Prevent Excel running slow, freezing and not opening by optimizing your workbook. Close unused applications, disable unnecessary add-ins, split large workbooks, or use the 64-bit Excel for better memory handling.
