Hi there

We've got our guest of honor on board now, so the dine and dance on Tuesday the 10th of March will go ahead as planned!

We have more than 50 RSVPs but if you haven't yet contacted me never fear, there is still room. Please email or text me to let me know if you want to come, so I can give the restaurant an indication of numbers, and we can organise enough seating.

Important - The venue, at 156 Cuba Street, remains the same, but it has undergone a name change. Veni Vidi Vici is now called Cin Cin. It's still an Italian restaurant.

As far as our special guest knows, it's a birthday dinner for someone else, so let's try to keep the real reason secret and surprise him when he shows up!

So - See you at Cin Cin, 156 Cuba Street, on Tuesday the 10th of March, from 7pm.  :-D

Cheers,
Jill

Hi everyone

We have an excellent night organized for you! A good meal, some great entertainment, plenty of lovely music to dance to, and a guest of honour who still has no idea what we have planned for him! ;-)

We’ve talked to the manager at Cin Cin and are happy to report that he has done us a really good deal for a three-course, set menu dinner, of $35 per person. As there will be about 60 people there, a set menu charged at a flat rate (pay for yourselves as you leave) will allow for everyone to get their meals promptly, and it is really good value.

The menu gives you plenty of flexibility –

First course is mixed antipasti platters for each table

There are several choices of main course, including a vegetarian dish, a beef dish, a pork and fennel dish, mushroom risotto, and a choice of three kinds of pizza

For dessert you can choose between panna cotta or tiramisu

If you are vegan, vegetarian, or are gluten-intolerant, the chef can adjust dishes to your needs; just let them know when you order your meal. If you have any other dietary issues please let me know as soon as possible, and I will ask them if they can provide any suitable alternatives.

Cin Cin is giving us the whole place for the night, and a really good deal on food, so they won’t be making much money on this event.  It would be really nice if we could repay their generosity by supporting the bar.

We’ll have the card for Alan at both the Saturday practica and Geoff’s Sunday practica, and then at Queer Tango on Monday night, for anyone who hasn’t yet signed or donated towards the gift for Alan. We may miss some people because they’re in Nelson for Summer Tango, but there will be an opportunity on the night for people to sign the card.

If you haven’t yet sent an RSVP and would like to come, or did RSVP but are now unable to come, let me know. There’s still room, but we need to let Cin Cin know how many people to cater for.

If you have any questions, email me at jillia...@xtra.co.nz or phone me on 383 5181; or text me at 021 0434343.

Cheers,
Jill

And a Reminder as well...

No Nina's Sunday this weekend (8th March) as Crossways somehow double booked the space...
See you all at St. Mark's on Saturday 14 March!

Hi everyone

The following email, apart from the last 2 paragraphs, doesn't apply to you, if you're already on Peter's mailing list.  I'm writing to you because my own contact list is far from comprehensive, and for the most part I can't reach those who are not on Peter's mailing list.  I'm hoping you will pass this email on to anyone you know of who is 'out of the loop.'

It has come to my attention that quite a large number of people haven't been getting my emails about Alan's surprise farewell dine-and-dance at Cin Cin. A lot of people seem to have missed out which concerns me a lot. A couple of people have told me that they thought it was a 'secret party' open to only a select group. This is complete rubbish.  The only secrecy about the event was that it is to be a surprise for Alan.

I sent the emails to everyone on my contacts list and to Peter, who maintains the tango mailing list, with the request that he send it on to everyone except Alan. Peter's done that without fail, but he can't send emails to people who don't give him their email addresses. I have always assumed that everybody did that so that they could receive the tango newsletters.

If any of your tango friends are not on Peter's mailing list, could you suggest that they email him, and ask him to put them on it?  If you only received this email directly from me, you're not on his mailing list or your email address needs to be updated, so you need to contact him too. His address is:   peter...@gmail.com

If you know of people who might like to come, but don't know about tonight's event, please tell them about it, and either forward my emails to them, or get them to contact me - text me on 021 0434343. I can always let the restaurant know we'll have some more people coming, and there is still room.

We've been taking the card around the different milongas and practicas but owing to limited time, we have missed quite a few people. The card will be available at Cin Cin for more people to sign it during the evening and we are still taking donations toward the farewell gift.

We have found the perfect gift for Alan, but more money is needed to secure it. A few of us have dug a little deeper and donated $40 each - if a couple more people can do this, it'll be in the bag. Of course, smaller donations will be gratefully accepted - if several people who haven't yet donated were to give $5 each, that's a substantial contribution. Nina and I will buy it and hope to recoup some of the money with your help. It's a really beautiful and unusual piece, and we think he will love it. A fitting memento of his twelve years in Wellington. But you will have to come along tonight if you want to see it!

Please contact me if you have any questions or want to RSVP for the dinner. And please put the word out about the dine-and-dance, to everybody - except Alan!

Thanks,
Jill

Hi everyone

I just wanted to say to everyone who was involved in Alan's farewell dine-and-dance last night, big BIG thanks for making it such a great evening.

Each and every one of you made it a success just by being there, and bringing your energy and enthusiasm and obvious affection for Alan to the occasion. He was very touched and while totally shocked by the surprise we sprang on him, he rose to the occasion admirably.

In fact, another big thankyou goes to Alan for being downright heroic in your efforts to get to the restaurant, when still thinking you were going to a birthday party for Neville (thanks for playing along Neville!) after finding yourself locked out of your house!! The evening wouldn't have been the same without you!  ;-)

I'd also like to send special thanks to our performers, Adriana, Sveta and Emilio, and their support people (Michael and Tom). You were all fantastic; there is nothing to compare with singers and musicians who perform with such skill and genuine passion. I was blown away by all three of you and I think I wasn't the only one by a long shot.

Matthew can always be relied on to MC in style, and last night was no exception. Thankyou Matthew; I don't know what we would have done without you!

Thankyou also to Nina for your beautiful music. Nina showcased a lot of Alan's favourite tango music over the course of the evening, which I'm sure he enjoyed and also was a lovely way of making the evening a little more 'Alan.'

Belinda made an elegant and unique farewell card for Alan with a very appropriate cumparsita theme. Big thanks to you Belinda, and I very much appreciate it that you did it so quickly at short notice so we could get it around most of the tango venues for people to sign.

Debbie documented the occasion with her camera so thankyou very much for doing that Debbie; we'll look forward to seeing the results!

I also want to thank John and his staff at Cin Cin. It was his first time doing a dine-and-dance for the tango community and given the unforseen delays that couldn't be helped, I think they did a great job. The venue was lovely, the food was delicious, and the floor was great to dance on. I have to apologize for my own inexperience here; I think I crammed too much activity into the time frame that we had, and something had to give. A number of people didn't get dessert because it was getting late and they had to leave. I'm sorry about that. I will try to make it up to you by bringing plenty of cake to Nina's next Saturday milonga! :-)

Thankyou to all those who signed the card and donated towards Alan's gift, and to those who took the card around for signing and collected donations. It was great to be able to give Alan something that is unique to New Zealand and speaks to his love of music. A number of people took photos and video and sound recordings during the evening; thankyou to all of you and we will look forward to seeing and hearing the results!

Thankyou all for a lovely and very memorable evening, and for a fitting farewell celebration for Alan. And I think I speak for everyone when I thank you Alan, for your kindness, your generosity, and all the gorgeous dances you have shared with us. We are going to miss you!

Hello again

I promise that this is the last of my (often long-winded) emails for a while, but I just had to say one last but very important thing.

THANK YOU! to the teachers who so kindly cancelled their regular Tuesday night classes to make way for Alan's farewell dinner, and supported the event so wholeheartedly, not only coming along themselves but also encouraging their classes to attend as well.

Craig, Regine, Neville and Sharon - you are legends. Thankyou so much.

Also...
I had a chat with John at Cin Cin yesterday, and it emerged that after the dinner on Tuesday a number of people had left without paying.

I know, it happens to everyone at some time; you get distracted by goodbyes and gathering up your things and wondering where you left the car, and wander out without stopping at the counter to pay. I remember being mortified once when I realized I had walked out of a café without paying for my meal. I imagine that some of you have that same uncomfortable feeling now!

John was philosophical about it and was much more concerned that everyone had had a good time on the night, than he was with following up non-payers. But I know that we had many more people turn up than RSVPed, more like 80 than the 65-odd that we were expecting, and staff had to set up extra tables and chairs, but only 61 people paid for their meals. That's quite a few people leaving without paying.

John said don't worry about it, but I think it would be really nice if any of you who realize now that you left without paying, just nip in to Cin Cin sometime and say you forgot to pay your share for Tuesday the 10th, and would like to settle up. It was $35. And if you had a drinks tab, you could pay for that too.

Muchos gracias! :-)

Jill

Regine has commented:

John is being very good about the non payers....but we really want him to stay in business....
Anyone who feels embarrassed going back in, or isn't planning in being in the general area in the next little while, can leave their payment with Neville Craig or myself, to take to John at the next lunch milonga.

I agree: we really don't want John to make a loss on this. If you forgot to pay for your dinner, do feel free to give your money to Regine, Craig, Neville or myself and we will get it to John.

Cheers,
Jill
