With a modded Xbox original (softmod or hardmod), you have the ability to FTP into your Xbox to transfer files. What this means is that you can transfer files from the PC to the Xbox (music, games, emulators, roms, movies), and also from the Xbox to the PC. You can also install custom dashboards, and other homebrew programs.

If you can't navigate the dashboard due to distortion, maybe you could plug it into an HDTV, change the video settings, and then plug it back to the CRT. And I would also change the video settings in the official MS dashboard as well as in unleashX.
FYI: Normally before hacking an Xbox I myself go into the official Xbox dashboard and set it to HDTV (720p) and hook it up with component cables. I then hack the Xbox using a Virtual Eprom for HD and load up UnleashX and adjust it in that dash too. As user Ham mentions you can go under system settings\video display and adjust settings.
It's running evox and i confirmed it's on NTSC mode with enigmah, it's on dashboard 5960. I tried all the resolutions available on the original MS dashboard, tried to force 480p by holding the triggers and pressing the analogs and it still don't work. Can someone help me to figure out the problem? Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor english.
The modification community for this system was amazing back in the prime of the system. EvolutionX and UnleashX still are the two main dashboards used by people with modded Xboxes but UnleashX is really moving itself to become more common than EvolutionX due to the customisability features that UnleashX provides. I personally use UnleashX as that was the one recommended to me but there is nothing to say that XBMC and/or EvolutionX are bad. Play about with them all and see what fits your taste.
Arriving late to the Xbox modification scene, UnleashX has proven itself to be one of the most flexible and user friendly dashboards available. It is known for its extensive skinning capabilities, extra options, and functionality not found in most dashboards, including a text editor, screensaver, FTP client (and FTP server, though being an FTP server is a feature common to many unofficial Xbox dashboards), and gamesave browser/downloader, skin colour scheme and format menu. It is also one of the few Xbox dashboards that support game/application preview videos and preview images.
UnleashX is one of the most active dashboards in the modification scene, with regular updates available through live update if connected to the internet. With its extensive feature list UnleashX has gained a lot of converts from traditional dashboards such as EvolutionX.
