Lenovo's docking stations connected via thunderbolt have been giving problems unless the proper firmware is installed (it did to me). Try installing Linux Verdor Firmware Service and see if there are updates for your thunderbolt 3.
I am using a Dell XPS 9570 laptop with dual boot Windows 10/Ubuntu 18.04 with lenovo thinkpad thunderbolt dock gen 2. The dock works fine on Windows. But on Ubuntu, it works for 5-10 minutes but then drops my connected devices like mouse, keyboard. The external monitor still works if I use the laptop keyboard or touchpad. I need to unplug and replug the thunderbolt cable for it to work, but it again drops the connections and its the same problem all over. How do I fix that?
If Lenovo doesn't provide the firmware in a bootable ISO or other system-neutral format (and shame on them), then your best bet in terms of a) foolproof and b) not wasting your valuable time, is probably to install a copy of windows on an external drive (or restore the system to an external drive if you still have the factory restore files). Boot from that drive, make sure you've got all the drivers needed so the firmware can see the dock, then run the firmware update within Windows. You can skip typing in the activation key and still have a usable system that will let you get the firmware patched.
Hi Everyone, did someone find a solution for this issue? I have the same problem with the Thunderbolt thinkpad docking station gen 2, it is not charging both by Macbook Pro and my Lenovo work computer. I tried resetting the SMC on the Mac, changed cables etc. nothing seems to work. Thanks a lot in advance!
Lenovo Dock Manager is a new solution that reduces the effort that IT administrators spend on the large scale deployment of Lenovo dock firmware updates. This solution runs on your PC and maintains a cache of the current firmware versions for supported Lenovo docks. When a dock is attached that has down-level firmware, it is automatically updated by Dock Manager. Video resources and links that may be helpful can be found below:
It can automatically download firmware updates from Lenovo Support directly over the Internet or from a local repository on your network that is created and maintained using Update Retriever. The four-character "machine type" for the supported docks listed below can be used in Update Retriever when searching for the latest firmware packages.
I updated the dock's firmware to the latest version. I reinstalled the most recent Intel drivers to replace the ones updated by Windows Update. Also, I tested restoring BIOS settings to factory and BIOS defaults. But the issue still persists.
I currently run 4 displays off a single USB-C port to a thunderbolt dock. I have 2 of the lenovo docks daisy chained and I only plug 1 USB-C cable into my laptop. If you are having an issue with it duplicating your display check your drivers and the setting on the dock.
only if you're using the thinkpad hybrid USB-C and USB-A dock that you'll get the displaylink support, and it a hit-and-miss based on this post - -Workstations/Thinkpad-Hybrid-USB-C-with-USB-A-Dock-compatibility-with-Macbooks/m-p/5134764
