Elasmobranchs are a closely related group of fishes, differing from bony fishes by having cartilaginous skeletons and five or more gill slits on each side of the head. In contrast, bony fishes have bony skeletons and a single gill cover. Elasmobranchs include sharks, sawfishes, rays, and skates.
The fossil record of rays and skates dates back to the Lower Jurassic (150 million years ago). All of the major taxa are known by the Upper Cretaceous (100 million years ago) to the Paleocene (50 million years ago). In contrast to the bony fishes, cartilaginous fishes leave behind little fossil records with the exception of teeth and scales.
Most rays are kite-shaped with whip-like tails possessing one or two stinging spines while skates have fleshier tails and lack spines. Rays protect themselves with these stinging spines or barbs while skates rely on thorny projections on their backs and tails to for protection from predators. Skates have small teeth while rays have plate-like teeth adapted for crushing prey. Another difference is that rays are generally much larger than skates.
Rays, skates, and sharks all belong to the class Chondrichthyes (Greek, chondro meaning cartilage and ichthosmeaning fish). Characteristics of Chondrichthyes include a skeleton made of cartilage, jaws, paired fins, and paired nostrils.
The subclass Elasmobranchii includes sharks, rays, and skates. Elasmobranchs are characterized by cylindrical or flattened bodies, five to seven pairs of gill slits, an upper jaw not fused to the cranium, and placoid scales. Placoid scales, also referred to as dermal denticles, have the same structure as a tooth consisting of three layers. These scales are arranged in a regular pattern on sharks and irregular patterns on rays and skates.
Located next to the James City County Recreation Center, this bowl-style skate park offers 10,000 square feet of concrete jumps and ramps. Additionally, there is a paved half-mile multi-use trail that encircles the skate park and the Recreation Center.
The Skate Park is used by experienced and inexperienced skateboarders, bikers and inline skaters. Serious injury could result from colliding with other users, falling on the concrete surface and flying objects. James City County does not assume responsibility for injuries. Use of the facility is at your own risk.
Storage
Bags are not allowed on the ice, and coats must be worn or checked. We recommend that skaters leave personal items at home if they do not want to pay for bag check. Limited lockers available this year.

Own Skates
For those bringing their own skates, tickets roll out daily for skate times one week in advance, throughout the season. Click here to book "bring your own skates" tickets.
Please do not book multiple own skate sessions in a row. This allows us to accommodate as many skaters as possible each day. Each skater is limited to one time slot per person per day, and max 5 tickets per booking per day.
The Rink is open rain or shine, but may close for heavy rain. The park closes if weather conditions are severe. You will receive an email if your skate session is cancelled for inclement weather. Please check the rink message at bryantpark.org for daily updates.
I have my own skates. Can I book multiple skate sessions in a row one day?
We do not allow multiple skate sessions to be booked in a row. This allows us to accommodate as many skaters as possible each day. We ask that each skater limit themselves to one time slot per person per day.
When is the best time to skate to avoid crowds?
-Early mornings: a great time to skate with small children, especially as skate aids are free before 11am daily, per availabilty.
-Off peak dates and times: visit weekdays and mornings, and dates before Thanksgiving and after the new year.
Other non-skating adults cannot enter the pavilion, but can enjoy the view from around The Rink or from The Lodge Bar + Food Hall. Non-skaters in Premium Skate parties must have a Premium Skate ticket to join their group in Polar Lounge.

Winter skate is managed as a part of the Northeast Skate Complex along with six other skate species in the same fishery management plan. Of these species, winter skates are the primary species harvested for human consumption, for the meat in their wings. U.S. wild-caught winter skate is a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations.

It's easy: just purchase a timed session online, arrive 10-15 minutes early to pick up your ice skates, and bundle up. Then enjoy your time on the ice for an hour! Capacity is limited and online reservations will be prioritized, so be sure to check availability before coming in person.
Montgomery Parks is planning to build five new skate parks in Montgomery County. Before we begin to build new skate parks, we are looking for ideas and suggestions on what features would make our skate parks totally shreddable for skateboarders, in-line skaters, and bikers of all ages and abilities.
As part of a park-wide renovation, Montgomery Parks will be building a new 10-12,000-square-foot skate park at Ovid Hazen Wells Recreational Park in Clarksburg. We will be seeking community input for this skate park project in the fall of 2023. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2024 and the park opening expected in the fall of 2025.
Wheaton Regional Park will be a hub for adventure sports! Montgomery Parks is in the planning phase of a premier, regional adventure sports park that will include a large skate park, and likely include a pump track, bike skills area, parkour course, bouldering wall, play spaces, and social gathering spots. Introduced as part of the Wheaton Regional Park Master Plan in 2022, construction of this facility is expected to begin in 2025 with anticipated park opening in late 2026. We will seek public input as the project moves forward.
Newport Mill Local Park, with its proximity to neighborhood schools including Albert Einstein High School and Newport Mill Middle School, is an ideal site for a skate spot. Montgomery Parks received State of Maryland Bond Bill funding for this project in 2022. Construction for this project is expected to begin in 2024 or 2025.
Building on the success of the popular South Germantown bike park, Montgomery Parks plans to build a new 10,000-square-foot skate park to complement the bike skills area and bike park. The long-term vision is to create an adventure sports park with a pump track, bike skills area, and skate park. Construction for this project is expected to begin in 2025.
The Skate Park offers a variety of programming options including group lessons and private lessons, summer clinics, rentals for birthday parties and private functions, competitions, demos and other special events.
