First of all, _please_ provide correct addresses from your posts.
Since I didn't see it posted here, and I'm not sure where CIS's PCM group
posted the information I gave them when the additional access method was
put in place, here is a repost of the message I sent to
httpusers...@http.tamu.edu at the end of October (Send a "subscribe"
message to httpusers-ann...@http.tamu.edu to join).

The official name for the user web server is: http.tamu.edu
_no_ other names should be used.
When this server was brought online last year to relieve the load from
tam2000, it was necessary to put the web server on an alternate port,
namely 8000.
Due to advances in server technology since that time, the same server is
being offered from two ports, the old 8000, and the traditional port where
no number is needed.
Both ports will continue to function, but the default port is now preferred.
This means that if your URL was:
http://http.tamu.edu:8000/~zyx0987/
it can now be written as either:
http://http.tamu.edu/~zyx0987/ (preferred, or)
http://http.tamu.edu:8000/~zyx0987/ (old way, but will still work)

[Yet to be announced (as soon as some documentation is ready) is a faster
method of determining web page hits than scanning the log file. A small
database is now kept on a daily basis that will decrease the time taken to
analyze one's web hits by an order of magnitude (or two). If you are using
a "canned" program to analyze your web page hits, you will not be able to
utilize this faster method without modifying the code; and that is left up
to you if you wish to use such programs.]
