REDESIGNED TEXAS A&M WEB CALENDAR GOES ONLINE FRIDAY
_________________________________________________________________
What time does the football game begin? Where is the engineering
conference taking place? When do spring classes start? These and other
questions may be answered on Texas A&M University's web calendar,
which debuts Friday (Nov. 1) in a new format.
"The old format was functional, but it was somewhat obscure. It was
harder for people to find what they were looking for, and the format
wasn't as user-friendly as it could have been," says Keith Marrocco,
Computing and Information Services internet analyst and calendar
designer.
"We revamped the entire format, making it hopefully more intuitive. It
should be much easier for users to locate events, as well as to enter
events of their own."
Located at http://www.tamu.edu/calendar/ , the new format is easy to
use and resembles a traditional monthly calendar. Viewers can take a
quick peek at the day's events, look at upcoming events for the week
or navigate from month to month to see what's coming up in the future.
The calendar format also allows users to search for events by title,
location and sponsor.
Members of the university community may add events by selecting the
"add/manage" button. Events added should have a university or system
sponsor and take place on campus or in Bryan-College Station; appeal
to a general audience or to the faculty, staff or students; or
substantially increase parking or hotel demands. Holidays, exhibits,
lectures, conferences, concerts and athletic competitions are just a
few of the many types of events that may be included on the calendar.
The web calendar also contains links to some departmental calendars
that feature faculty meetings and other related events.
"Having links to individual departmental calendars allows users to
search elsewhere for events they are unable to find in the central
calendar," says Marrocco. "Eventually we want to create a search
engine to make it even easier to find an event, whether it's on the
central calendar or on a department's own calendar."
The calendar's banner or headline graphic is another feature of the
new format.
"The banner offers a rotating selection of events and departmental
images related to Texas A&M University," Marrocco says. "Clicking on
the image takes one to a web page related to that image."
Marrocco says banner images officially tied to the university may be
submitted for potential display. Banner images should be 450 pixels
wide by 60 pixels high and saved in a graphic format such as GIF or
JPEG. Send the completed image's web address or URL to
calenda...@tamu.edu.
The web calendar was redesigned by staff members in the Office of
Computing Services. Structure and guideline recommendations were made
by members of Texas A&M's web calendar committee. Committee members
include Jane Bailey, Janey Cook, Judy Cook, Kathleen Davis, Lynn Dodd,
Tiffany Drake, Marilyn Franer, Amy French, Nellwyn Haley, Adelle
Hedleston, Carolyn Jaros, Judy Jordan, Marie Kelley, Amy Klinkovsky,
Keith Marrocco, Tammy Moeller, Christi Moore, Shirley Payne, Kimberlee
Pottberg, Reba Ragsdale, Brenda Sims, Leanne South, Lesley Stoup, John
Thornton, Juanita Walker, Linda Windle and Millie Wright.
