The Arnold and Mabel Beckman FoundationThe Beckman Young Investigators
Program The funding agency below has NOT limited the number of
grants that can be submitted to this particular program. Please distribute
this information to faculty in your college to see if they have any interest
in submitting a grant. For our files only, we ask that all faculty applying
to this program send us a complete copy of the materials they submit to this
Program, attention to Janet Gonzales, mail stop 1112.
Thank you.

Statement of Research Grant Policy and Procedures for the Beckman Young
Investigators Program
The Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation makes grants to non-profit research
institutions to promote research in chemistry and the life sciences, broadly
interpreted, and particularly to foster the invention of methods, instruments
and materials that will open up new avenues of research in science. The
Beckman Young Investigators (BYI) Program is intended to provide research
support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of
academic careers in the chemical and life sciences.

Guidelines
The following general guidelines apply: The BYI program is open to persons
with tenure-track appointments in academic and non-profit institutions that
conduct fundamental research in the chemical and life sciences. The program
is intended primarily for institutions in the United States. Only proposals
of exceptional merit from foreign institutins will receive consideration.
Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States at
the time of application. Documentation of permanent residency status must be
provided with the application. Persons who have applied for permanent
residency but have not received their government documentation by the time of
application are not eligible.

To be eligible, an applicant should not have completed more than three full
years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent research
appointment on the anniversary date of initial appointment in the year in
which application is to be made. Regardless of eligibility under this rule,
no individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator award more than
three times.

Projects should show promise for contributing to significant advances in the
research fields of interest to the Foundation. They should represent
innovative departures in research rather than extensions or expansions of
existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional boundaries
of scientific disciplines is encouraged.

Projects are normalllor> years. When
extraordinary circumstances warrant, support may be provided over a one-year
or three-year period. Grants are normally in the range of $200,000 over the
term of the project. The Foundation does not provide funds for overhead or
for indirect costs.

The research efforts supported in w the Beckman Foundation may lead to
patentable discovery or the development of copyrightable materials. Where
such products of the research are licensed and accrue income to the grantee
institution, the Beckman Foundation expects to share in the income so
generated. The plans for such sharing will depend on institutional
circumstances, the amounts of other funding and other factors. A plan for
sharing of income from sales and licensing of materials developed should be
included in the application.

Limitations
Funding will not be considered for the following:
General institutional expenses.

General fundraising campaign expens and mass mailings.

As a contribution to unified funds or tod that is itself used to award grants
of any kind.

Social science, religious, political, orch that does not fall within the
Foundation's areas of interest, as described above. Procedure
Complete the application materials, consApplication Page and a Principal
Investigator Information Page. Incomplete applications are at a disadvantage
in the competition and may not be evaluated. One copy of all proposal
materials must be submitted without staples in the following order:
Application Page Principal Investigator Information Page Curriculum Vitae
Four Page Proposal (incorporating all references, diagdrawings) Three Letters
of Reference

Note: Black and white diagrams are recommended. If color diagrams or drawings
are incorporated in the proposal, twenty copies of those pages are required
with the proposal.

Provide a curriculum vitae for tInvestigator.

The proposal should consist of a descriproposed work that is no more than
four single-spaced printed pages in length, employing standard fonts no
smaller than 12 point. The description should make clear the rationale for
the proposed work, its potential importance, the approach to be taken,
progress to date and the potential significant outcomes. References, diagrams
and drawings should be incorporated within the four page limitation.

Provide three sealed, confidential lettece on behalf of the Principal
Investigator, to be included with proposal materials. Only three letters will
be accepted. Facsimile or xerox copies of reference letters will not be
accepted. Reference letters must be received by the proposal deadline of
October 1. Application materials can be obtained from:
Programs Administrator Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation 100 Academy
Irvine, CA 92612

or a copy of the application form can be {HYPERLINK "ambfapp.html"}printed
from here.

Completed applications should be sent to the same address.

Timetable
The deadline for receipt of applications as described above is October 1. The
recommendations of the Grants Advisory Council are forwarded to the
Foundation's Board of Directors, whose decisions on awards are final.
Notifications of awards are typically made in the spring.

Because of the excessive administrative requirements involved, the Foundation
is unable to provide critical commentary on unsuccessful proposals.

of methods, instruments and materials that will open up new avenues of
research in science. The Beckman Young Investigators (BYI) Program is
intended to provide research support to the most promising young faculty
members in the early stages of academic careers in the chemical and life
sciences.<

<

The following general guidelines apply:<
<
<
The BYI program is open to persons with tenure-track appointments in
academic and non-profit institutions that conduct fundamental research in
the chemical and life sciences. The program is intended primarily for
institutions in the United States. Only proposals of exceptional merit
from foreign institutins will receive consideration. Candidates must be
citizens or permanent residents of the United States at the time of
application. Documentation of permanent residency status must be provided
with the application. Persons who have applied for permanent residency
but have not received their government documentation by the time of
application are not eligible.<
<
<
<
To be eligible, an applicant should not have completed more than three
full years in his or her tenure-track or other comparable independent
research appointment on the anniversary date of initial appointment in
the year in which application is to be made. Regardless of eligibility
under this rule, no individual may apply for a Beckman Young Investigator
award more than three times.<
<
<
Projects should show promise for contributing to significant advances in
the research fields of interest to the Foundation. They should represent
innovative departures in research rather than extensions or expansions of
existing programs. Proposed research that cuts across traditional
boundaries of scientific disciplines is encouraged.<
<
<
Projects are normally funded for a period of three<< years. When
extraordinary circumstances warrant, support may be provided over a
one-year or three-year period. Grants are normally in the range of
$200,000 over the term of the project. The Foundation does not provide
funds for overhead or for indirect costs.<
<
<
The research efforts supported in whole or in part by the Beckman
Foundation may lead to patentable discovery or the development of
copyrightable materials. Where such products of the research are licensed
and accrue income to the grantee institution, the Beckman Foundation
expects to share in the income so generated. The plans for such sharing
will depend on institutional circumstances, the amounts of other funding
and other factors. A plan for sharing of income from sales and licensing
of materials developed should be included in the application. <

<
