Call for Papers for a Special Issue of the
Journal of Parallel Distributed Computing
on

CLUSTER AND NETWORK-BASED COMPUTING
------------------------------------

The emerging trend in high performance computing is moving towards Cluster and
Netowrk-based Computing, an approach in which powerful commodity
single/multiprocessor
workstations or PCs are connected by either a general purpose local area
network or
specialized interconnects to achieve high performance. The recent advances in
high-speed networks, efficient networking protocols and improved
microprocessor
design for higher performance, coupled with the availability of public domain
software, including operating system, compiler tools, and message passing
libraries,
make Cluster Computing appealing in terms of both performance and
cost-effectiveness.
Along with this web-based computing or internet based computing is becoming
a popluar
paradigm for cost-effective high-performance computing.

The recent interests in Cluster and Network-based Computing have spurred
research
interests in network architectures and protocols, design and implementation
of software
tools for efficient messaging layers, programming environments and distributed
shared memory abstraction, the use of Java and web-based computing, design,
implementation and performance evaluation/tuning of parallel and distributed
algorithms, scheduling and global resource management, Parallel I/O and file
systems, high-availability, check-pointing and process migration, and
compiler,
operating system and architecture support for cluster computing.

This special issue of the Journal Parallel and Distributed Computing (JPDC) is
targeted to include a collection of original unpublished research articles
that
describe recent advances in Cluster and Network-Based Computing. Topics of
interests include, but are not limited to:
network architectures and protocols, design and implementation of
software
tools for efficient messaging layers, programming environments and
distributed
shared memory abstraction, the use of Java and web-based computing,
design,
implementation and performance evaluation/tuning of parallel and
distributed
algorithms, scheduling and global resource management, parallel I/O
and file
systems, high-availability, check-pointing and process migration, and
compiler,
operating system and architecture support for cluster computing.
Papers of experimental or theoretical nature will be considered.

Authors should follow the JPDC manuscript format as described in the
"Information
for Authors" at the end of each issue of JPDC. Authors should submit their
papers by January 1, 2000. The review decision will be communicated to the
authors by June 1, 2000. The journal version will be reviewed as per JPDC
review
process for special issues. For details for the JPDC special issue see
http://www.serc.iisc.ernet.in/~govind/JPDC-cfp.txt (or)
http://www.cse.psu.edu/~anand/JPDC-cfp.txt

Authors are encouraged to submit their paper electronically to either one
of the
co-guest editors. Electronic submissions must be in the form of a readable
postscript file. Authors should submit a correct PostScript (level 2)
file
of their paper to be considered and make sure that the PostScript file will
print on a PostScript printer that uses 8.5 x 11 inch size (letter size)
paper. Hard copy submissions are also permitted and, like electronic
submissions,
must be received by the above deadline. Send six copies of the manuscript one
of the co-guest editors.
