"
Where Will Your Students Find Jobs? Examining Regional
Differences in Economic Performance"
While it has not been immune to the fallout from
the financial crisis, Texas has performed better than most states. And
although the relative strength in Texas has gotten a lot of attention
recently, it is well known that regions often perform differently.
Sunbelt states have experienced faster job growth for several decades.
Also, in the 1980s in particular, there was a large variation of
economic performance across states. This period, known as the decade of
the rolling recessions, began with declines in the Farm Belt, followed
by declines in the Energy Belt and the Rust (manufacturing) Belt, and
finally, due to reductions in defense spending, a decline in the Gun
Belt. Various academics have studied the question of why states have
differed in both the short and long terms. This literature gives
important evidence on factors currently affecting growth across the
states.
In his presentation,
Keith Phillips, senior economist and policy advisor, will address the
variances and convergences of economic performance across the United
States. He will draw upon research that looks at both cyclical and
long-term factors. As specific examples, he will highlight recent
differences in the economic performances of Texas and California. He
will also examine why cities can be so disparate by comparing Chicago
and Detroit.

Dr. Meer:
This is an announcement from one of my committee members and I wanted to let
you know about it early so that you can pass it on to your students.
Some students may have an interest and we could discuss it further at our
meeting.
