Fijian Hindus have been affected by devastating floods about two weeks ago.
Thousands of Hindus have been affected by the devastation and most of them
have lost everything and a large number of Hindus have been affected with water
related disease and are in badly need of relief.
VHP of America is working with Shri Jai Dayal Ji of Fiji who is the President of
VHP Fiji directly and has requested Hindus of America to help them to raise
$75,000 to help the Fijian Hindus. The funds are needed for medical, education
and goods for day to day living. VHP of America has issued an appeal to raise
the funds to help the victims.

Re: Relief Funds for the Victims ofFijiFloods

A 15-day state of disaster is currently in effect on the west coast ofFijithat
has been ravaged by floods since January 22. Twenty one active
evacuation centers have been set up with a total of 1,333 evacuees. The
state of disaster, declared on January 25 by Colonel Inia Seruiratu,
applies to Ba, Lautoka, Nadi, Nadroga, Ra, and Tavua. In a 48-hour
period, 400 millimeters of rainfall was recorded in Nadi, which
triggered flooding across the west ofViti Levu. Severe
flooding and landslides have forced thousands from their homes to seek
safety in evacuation centers, reported Red Cross. Crops had been washed
away; homes, shops, and roads damaged; and communities left with no
water or power supply, said the IFRC. There have been reported cases of
water-related diseases, including diarrhea and typhoid, as a result of
the floods. The damage caused is estimated to be about $30 million.
