The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a major farm workers rights
activist group, has reached out to us in friendship. I've booked a
class with them, tentatively for Friday, March 3rd at 7pm, location
TBD.
This is kind of a big thing because the CIW is the real deal, and it
aligns with our plan (discussed at the last general meeting) to create
friendships with local organizations. I'd like to give the CIW a good
turn out to show them that we're for real, so please come out to this!
*ALSO* I told the CIW that I would let the subscribers to our Google
Group know about an event that the CIW is doing, so what follows is an
invitation from the CIW to participate:
----------
Hey there fine people at the Tampa Free Skool,
I hope y'all are doing well! My name is Julia, I work in Immokalee, FL
with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, an organization of
farmworkers that through incredible grassroots organizing have pushed
10 major food corporations in signing onto agreements which give
farmworkers fair pay and human working conditions, as well as
protection from the modern-day slavery that's just rampant. (www.ciw-
online.org)
The Coalition has decided to go on a hunger strike outside of the
Publix HQ in Lakeland, FL from March 5-10. They have been in a
campaign against Publix for almost 3 years and they are taking it to
the next level. We'd like to invite Tampa Free Skool folks to take
part in the Fast for Fair Food, whether it be coming down during the
week or attending the beautifully symbolic procession and ceremony to
break the fast on Saturday, March 10th.
