Does anyone know of a tool that will allow you to QUICKLY identify an unspecified projection – the formats do not require/permit one? I can chase one done but it is time consuming.
I don’t believe ogrinfo will identify a projection without a .prj, so this wouldn’t work for an unspecified projection. Brute force may be your best option, and to that end, there are a couple of apps that may help:
http://jhnklly.github.io/projectionuesser/
https://www.egger-gis.at/automatic-projection-detection/shapefile-projectionfinder/
Unfortunately, while the first project looks promising, the app is throwing 405 errors when you try to upload an .shp – maybe you can reach-out to the developer to fix? Here’s the GitHub proj if you want to fork it/report issues - https://github.com/jhnklly/projectionuesser. It doesn’t look like the dev is responding to bug reports, though, so you might need to dive-in yourself.
