The Honda Z50RD, also known as the Christmas Special or the Chrome Edition, is an all-chrome Honda Z series minibike released in 1986. A limited edition of the Honda Z50R[a], it is considered to be rare.
Z50RDs were manufactured in July or August 1986, and shipped to Honda dealers in December.[3] The combined total of Z50Rs and Z50RDs shipped by Honda in 1986 was 11,652, but the total number for Z50RDs alone is unknown.[3] Nor is it known how many dealers were allowed to purchase Z50RDs, but some collectors believe that each dealer could buy 2; there were 805 Honda dealers in the United States in the 1980s.[1]

At the intersection of sophistication and aggression lies the Touring Edition Exhaust. A full 3" T304L stainless steel downpipe-back configuration, the Touring Edition Exhaust is the perfect dose of steel for drivers looking for straight-pipe performance, a deep, sophisticated exhaust note, and zero drone at highway speeds.
Featuring an integrated front pipe, bespoke midpipe resonator, and AWE's patented drone-canceling solution, 180 Technology, the Touring Edition delivers a full-bodied, rasp-free K20 soundtrack unachieved by any of its peers. Under boost and heavy throttle, the Touring Edition screams. At highway speeds, drone-free within the cabin -- the best of both worlds. Perfectly engineered and packaged for the FK8 Civic Type, all backed by AWE No CEL and Perfect Fitment Guarantees.
As exhaust gases exit the K20 engine and flow into an AWE 180 Technology equipped resonator, they pass through strategically located ports, and into reflection chambers. Sound waves, carried by these exhaust gasses, bounce off the walls of the reflection chambers. By controlling the size and location of the ports and the chambers, we also control when the sound waves exit the chambers. The specific timing of when the reflected sound waves rejoin the main exhaust flow creates a one-hundred-and-eighty-degree out-of-phase sound wave that cancels out problematic frequencies. More on AWE 180 Technology in the tab above.
For those who like it raw and rowdy, the Track Edition is for you. The Track Edition shares the same integrated front pipe, bespoke midpipe resonator, and precision engineering as its Touring Edition counterpart, minus AWE's patented drone-canceling solution, 180 Technology.
In place of the 180 Technology resonator in the rear lies a Track Edition straight section. As a result, this version is known to get (really) rowdy in mid range acceleration and deceleration, and may be too much for many. You've been warned.
The Touring and Track Edition Exhausts feature a modular tip design that allows drivers the choice of running double or triple 4.5" slash-cut tips via our bespoke stamped tip merges. With such interchangeability, a dual tip configuration can be converted into a tri-tip configuration (and vice-versa) within minutes via an AWE Tip Conversion Kit.
Each exhaust comes complete with 4.5" double-walled, slash-cut tips available in chrome silver or diamond black, and feature a stamped AWE logo. All tips are individually adjustable, allowing depth into the bumper to be set according to personal taste.
The 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition stormed to a new front-wheel drive track record at Suzuka Circuit, Honda's Formula 1 racetrack in Japan, with a time of 2 minutes 23.993 seconds. Originally built as a test facility for Honda, the 3.6-mile Suzuka track's figure-8 configuration today is known worldwide as a highlight of the Formula 1 season as a driver and fan favorite.
Piloted by Super GT Series racer Takuya Izawa, the Type R Limited Edition achieved its record-breaking lap during final performance evaluations in February using a development car built to final European production specifications, with no modifications or performance enhancements. Video capturing the record breaking lap through in-car footage is available here, with a separate video of the development crew working on the Type R at the track here.
"The Type R Limited Edition reflects Honda's dedication to refining the essence and driving pleasure of Type R as a sports car and exceeding the expectations of our customers," said Civic Type R Project Leader Hideki Kakinuma. "The engineering team and I embraced a racing spirit that has been passed down for generations, and it's this strong passion that's driving the evolution of the Civic Type R towards becoming the ideal sports car. Now the "advanced" Type R that I envisioned at the beginning of this development is a reality and I am overwhelmed by the result and how our efforts have been rewarded."
The 2021 Type R Limited Edition for the U.S. market is the ultimate street-legal, track-focused variant of Honda's legendary Civic Type R, with significant measures taken to reduce weight and improve handling performance. Just 600 will be available when it launches in the U.S. later this year, exclusively painted in new Phoenix Yellow Pearl with contrasting gloss black accents on the roof and mirrors, and a dark chrome Civic badge. Inside, each Type R Limited Edition will feature an individually numbered serial plate denoting the vehicle's original country of sale. The U.S.-spec Type R Limited Edition differs from the European version by retaining air conditioning, Honda Sensing, and the Display Audio system.
2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition mechanical upgrades from the standard Type R for the U.S. market include: Lightweight, forged aluminum wheels from acclaimed manufacturer BBS (18 lbs. unsprung weight reduction); Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires for improved traction and handling grip, as well as lower weight (1 lb. each); dampers optimized for the new wheel/tire package; recalibrated steering for finer control and feedback; and further weight reduction of 28 lbs. through measures such as strategic reduction of sound-deadening materials.
Under the hood, the Type R Limited Edition draws power from the same race-bred 2.0-liter VTEC Turbo engine, putting out a peak 306-horsepower (SAE net) and 295 lb.-ft. of torque (SAE net), with power delivered to the front wheels through a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission and limited-slip differential.
The substantial power and torque is effectively managed by Type R's dual axis strut front suspension system which virtually eliminates torque steer while allowing geometry optimized for maximum cornering performance.

Troy's been riding motorcycles and writing about them since 2006, getting his start at Rider Magazine. From there, he moved to Sport Rider Magazine before finally landing at Motorcycle.com in 2011. A lifelong gearhead who didn't fully immerse himself in motorcycles until his teenage years, Troy's interests have always been in technology, performance, and going fast. Naturally, racing was the perfect avenue to combine all three. Troy has been racing nearly as long as he's been riding and has competed at the AMA national level. He's also won multiple club races throughout the country, culminating in a Utah Sport Bike Association championship in 2011. He has been invited as a guest instructor for the Yamaha Champions Riding School, and when he's not out riding, he's either wrenching on bikes or watching MotoGP.
