Iam sure some will say, Ihave tried the secret place but it seems as if my challenges increased the more, oh believe me you are on the right track, because the devil will fight you tooth and nail to pull you out, but remain steadfast, he that keepeth us does not slumber or sleep. Yours might be painful moments or times of desperation, what do we do in that situation. I have noticed my pains and desperation brings out something in me, there is this desperacy in prayer and seeking God and other times, I just cry and take the easy way out. But now i have learnt to leverage on my pains and make them stepoing stones to higher dimension. I am going to embrace that fire in my bosom till it makes me better. So next time you are in pain or desperation, know that it is time to seek the Lord like never before.
In the same way, if we want to reach the depth of life with God that Jesus modeled, we need to find a diversion-free place to get away and be alone with the Father. It could be an office in the woods, your bedroom late at night, or a park down the street from your house. Or if all else fails, a closet or pantry.
Tyler and I have very different personalities, but we share an ache for God and we have both come to love prayer. I do it sitting cross-legged in the quiet of my room; he does it walking in a city park in a raincoat. Different method, same goal.
So, work with your personality, not against it; tailor your practice to your Myers-Briggs type and stage of life but find your secret place. Go there as often as you can. Prioritize it. Fall in love with it, with God. Without quiet prayer, your life with God will wither; with it, you will come alive to the greatest joy of life: a familiar friendship with Jesus.
John Mark Comer is the founding pastor of Bridgetown Church in Portland, Oregon, a teacher and writer with Practicing the Way, and the bestselling author of multiple books, including The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry and Live No Lies. Practicing the Way is his new book.
This book has serious problems, but the Lord has called me to write, so I have to get to work. (Gather the writing books from the floor and stack them on your desk again, fully accepting that you have a lot of hard work to do.)
I knew the Lord had reminded me of that verse. I got up and shut the door as the Word said to do, marveling at the fact that the closed door put me into the secret place, where God the Father waited for me.
Wonderful article, Christy, and exactly what I needed today as I dive back into my story after almost three years. I love the way your sparkling personality shines through as you share your hard-won wisdom.
A Dark and Secret Place by Jen Williams is a mystery thriller with a suspicious cult and serial killer. In A Dark and Secret place, a woman discovers her mother has secretly been speaking with a serial killer for decades.
To get there, I enter through a white picket gate and follow a path over a river where water lilies grow and dragonflies hover. The path bends to the right and ends in a white pavilion covered in wisteria and glistening in the sun. Surrounded by flowers it beckons me in behind the purple curtain into the very arms of Jesus. He is always there. At times He stands at the entrance, at other times He quietly waits for me inside. But He waits for me expectantly always glad to see me when I enter in.
During the New Testament times, that inner room or secret place, was the bedroom where husband and wife met to exchange intimacies that only they knew about. In earlier years it used to describe a place where you would hide your most valuable possessions, a secure place where a person would put money or treasure, a safe place for something valuable.
But I like the later idea that it describes a place of intimacy, where secrets are shared only between husband and wife, where no one else may enter. Each one, can bare their heart and share in a relationship so tender. I like that this describes my secret place where I meet Jesus: totally secure, totally safe. This is the secret place where I meet the Lover of my soul, to bare my heart before Him and listen to what His Spirit has to say to me. It is the place where I escape the world, to take part in the mingling of my human spirit with His divine Spirit.
In this secret place we do the daily exchange: my fear for His courage, my pain for His healing, my sorrow for His joy, my anxiety for His peace, my scars for His oil of healing, my ashes for His beauty, my exhaustion for His energy, my sense of being lost with His assurance that I am found, that I am His.
Dear friend, if you are hurting today, afraid, angry, scared, tired or lost, all you have to do is enter through the door of prayer, leave the world behind and go to your secret place and tell the Lover of your soul what is on your heart. He is standing there, waiting for you.

Like any relationship, growing in our walk with the Lord will take intentionality. Below is an excerpt from Living From the Secret Place that encourages each of us to fight for the place of intimacy with God in the secret place.
I have just recently been introduced to you, Jake through the interview you did with Wanda Alger. I have been feasting on your annointed teaching through your podcasts and newsletter. You are a powerful, scriptural voice for the body of Christ. May He continue to bless you and increase your presence and voice. Thank you.
The Secret Place is not what you think it is. Contrary to the lies many have been taught, it is not a place you can enter. It is not a prayer closet or a room designated for prayer. Neither is it an atmosphere that you enter through worship. But without understanding the secret place, you will never fully benefit from being a Christian. The secret place is indeed a secret, but it will no longer be a secret to you.
The Secret Place unmasks the greatest revelation of who you are and the extraordinary life you are meant to live as a Christian. Find answers to why you have not been experiencing the success, victory, protection, and prosperity the Lord has promised you in his Word. Get ready for your life to change forever, because The Secret Place is open to you now!
I also recommend grabbing a ruler to mark the outline of your secret compartment and a few extra blades for your box cutter. The blades get dull quickly and rotating and replacing them helps the cutting step go much quicker.
4. Wrap the cover with plastic bags. To keep glue off of the cover, wrap it with plastic bags. Stick one in-between the pages you marked off in the front and wrap it around the front cover. Then wrap another bag around the back cover.
5. Brush glue on the outside of the pages. Brush the glue on the outside of the pages all around the book. Put on a few layers, but make sure to smooth out any globs as they will dry white. Press the book firmly in your hand to keep the pages together as you glue them.
6. Place the book in a vice or under a weight. To cut down on warping, place the book in a vice or under a heavy weight such as several large books. The pressure will hold the pages together as the glue dries. Let the book dry for about an hour.
7. Draw the outline of your secret compartment. Using a ruler, trace an outline of the secret compartment on the first page of the glued together section of your book. It can be any size or shape you want, but leave at least a half an inch border all around it.
This is the part of the project that takes the most time-so just put on some tunes and get in the zone. Rotate and replace the blade of the box cutter a few times in order to keep it sharp and efficient.
Stephen takes the information to Conway in the Murder Squad, who was the primary on the case the year before. They immediately go to St. Kilda's, and start interviewing the girls who had access to The Secret Place at the relevant time.
The action all takes place in one day. The story is told in alternating narratives. The first is in first person, from the point of view of Stephen Moran. The second narrative (in third person present tense) follows the eight girls, boarders at the school, in the year leading up to the crime and all the way up the point where Holly turns in the photo.
First I will start with what I liked about the book. I especially like the characters in French's books; sometimes it seems like the character exploration is just as important as solving the mystery. Most of the eight students that are important to the story are interesting. Scary kids, not what I remember teenage girls being like when I was in a very non-posh high school in Alabama (in the 1960s), but still interesting. Miss McKenna, headmistress of the school, is a good character. Her primary concern is the reputation of the school, and she is having a very bad day. We don't see a lot of her, but she is important to the plot.
The depiction of the two detectives is very well done. Stephen Moran is the narrator of the portion of the story about the investigation and the interrogations. We know about his goals, his fears, and his good and bad points (at least from his point of view). The reader knows less about Antoinette Conway because we are getting only Stephen's assessment of her and the situation, but she is an intriguing character and she grew on me. And then there is Holly's father, Frank, a policeman in the Undercover Division, who becomes involved later in the story. He is quite a character.
The school setting is excellent. The school takes boarders, the girls board four to a room, and there are two sets of four very close friends that are under suspicion. The girls' families are mostly very well-to-do and the girls are used to getting what they want.
