The palm leaf scale (Tamil = odiolai), is the mid-section of a thin palm leaf that corresponds to the total length of the anthropomorphic form of the sculptured deity (Sanskrit = murti56; Fig. 24) is carefully folded into 9 parts (Sanskrit = navatala) that proportionally represent the desired wax image.
A new odiolai is prepared for each wax model, and is kept fresh during the days it takes to manufacture the wax model by keeping it in a brass cup of water on the work table (Fig. 23).
Figure 24 illustrates how the folded odiolai is used to measure the various proportions of the head and torso of the wax model of the eagle god Garudan. When the wax model is completed, the odiolai is discarded. During the making of the wax model, the Sthapati constantly uses the odiolai to insure that the measurements of the icon are true to the dictates of the tala measurements.
[...]
One of the important tools used to create these icons is the palm leaf odiolai described above. Natural formation processes would most certainly erase any evidence of this tool in the archaeological record (except perhaps in the case of a dry cave), yet it represents a profound ritual-based system of measurement that insures that the same stylistic patterns for religious icons are created for over 1,000 years. Leaving aside the issue of stylistic
change through time in material culture in general108 and with south Indian bronzes in particular109,this relationship highlights the importance of carrying out a multivariate metric analysis of the spectacular Chalcolithic prestige/ritual objects such as crowns, scepters and mace heads to search out the possibility that a prescribed ritual-based system of
measurement may have been used by metal workers in the late 5th millennium BCE in the southern Levant. The discovery of any ‘underlying rules’ for the production of Chalcolithic metal work would have important implications for understanding the socio-religious role of the objects and craftspeople who produced them.
