Mr. Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi, born of late Mr. Vinanchiarachi and Mrs. Viyakulamarial Vinanchiarachi at the southern tip of India, Kanyakumari,  on 13th April 1946 and was  the Principal Adviser to the Director-General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Vienna, Austria until his retirement in December 2009.  He had his schooling and higher studies at institutions run by the Society of Jesus. He has to his credit several academic degrees with distinctions. He won the gold medal from St. Joseph's college, Trichy, for being the best outgoing M.A. (Economics) student in 1967. In 1997, he won the UNIDO Director-General's individual award for his outstanding performance.

He did his M.Phil. (Economics) under the supervision of Dr. M. Naganathan, Deputy Chairman, State Planning Commission, Government of Tamilnadu. In his doctoral thesis, prepared in the late 1980s under the guidance of Dr. K. Rajaratnam, on the dependent vulnerabilities of manufactured exports of the East Asian countries, quantified the vulnerabilities stemming from the high import intensity of export orientation, leading to the financial crisis of the late 1990s. His research paper on national industrial innovation systems won the best paper award at the 14th  International Conference on the Management of Technology organized by the Miami-based International Association for the Management of Technology (IAMOT) in Vienna in 2005. Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi worked as a lecturer in Economics at Pioneer Kumarasamy College, Nagercoil, and Loyola College, Chennai, before joining UNIDO.

He has authored several journal articles, books and reports. His most recent books are Myths and Realities of East Asian Model of Development, India's Time, Rethinking Development Realities,  and Intervene to Industrialise. 
Using the gift of education granted by his parents, Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi systematically climbed the ladder of career development by a dint of hard work, total dedication and integrity. He used the life experience of his parents as a great institution to learn the values of life and to inculcate a deep sense of determination to convert the challenges of life into opportunities.  

The rise of Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi from a small fishermen village at the southern tip of India to a coveted position in the world's highest office, the United Nations, bears testimony to the fact that it is not the aptitude that alone matters, but the appetite to grow and the attitude which determine one's altitude.   The award of the Ulaga Tamil Maamani, Tamil Crown Jewel of the World, is conferred on Mr. Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi for the great strides achieved by him at the international level.   

Dr. Vinanchiarachi is currently a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur and is engaged in international consultancy work from time to time.
