1) NGOs Meeting with UN Independent Expert, Ms Rita Izsak

It is with great pleasure that we at Pusat Komas, inform you of our intentions to organize a series of event on the topic of non-discrimination as per the program on Non-Discrimination that we have been working on since 2006.
Since 2010, KOMAS have successfully collaborated with the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) and SUHAKAM in organizing National Level Conference looking at race related issues in Malaysia. We have also engaged with the UN Special Rapporteur on Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related intolerance, Mr. Mutuma Rutere last year and invited him as the main speaker for the conference. While he was here we had good discussions with various government and non-government department and agencies. This is part of the “Ratify ICERD Campaign” spearheaded by Pusat KOMAS together with 9 other civil society and supported by 54 other civil societies in Malaysia.
This year we are organizing the 3rd National Conference on Non-Discrimination with the theme “Malaysia on the Path to Non-Discrimination –Is Equality for All?” on 21st August 2013 in Petaling Jaya. We have the pleasure of the UN Independent Expert on Minority Issues, Ms. Rita Izsak coming for the conference this year. She has been working on human rights and minority rights issues for a decade now and she will be here for one week to participate in the conference and also to speak in 2 public forums planned during that time in Penang and Sabah as well as engage with various government agencies.
It is in this context that we are having a meeting with interest groups and civil societies to have a discussion on minority issues in Malaysia.
The objective of this is to showcase the state of minorities in Malaysia and the efforts undertaken by local civil societies in addressing the issue. Other than that, we will also benefit from the experience and knowledge of the independent expert how the UN and international human rights standards are utilized in the protection of marginalized groups especially the minorities.
Details of discussion;
Date: 20th August 2013 (Tue)
Time: 9.30am - 12.30pm
Venue: Dignity International Office, A-2-10, Avenue 8, Jalan Sungai Jernih 8/1, Seksyen 8, Petaling Jaya, 46050 Selangor
Your participation in the meeting is very important as it is her first visit to Malaysia and your input will be of a great help to her. Please RSVP your attendance to lenah...@komas.org.
