Dear Mr Arumugam,
Workshop on “the implications of stronger copyright protection for Malaysia’s economy and society”
8 October 2012, Shah’s Village Hotel, Petaling Jaya
Third World Network (TWN) is pleased to inform you that we are organizing a Workshop on the “implications of stronger copyright protection for Malaysia’s economy and society” on 8 October 2012, in Kuala Lumpur.
We are delighted to invite you to this Workshop and hope that you will be able to participate.
The Workshop will seek to identify the key issues arising from the stronger copyright protection proposed by the USA in the current Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) negotiations, the copyright provisions the European Union (EU) is likely to propose in the current EU-Malaysia free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, the economic and social implications of these proposals and the options for responding to them.
For example the US is proposing in the TPPA: longer copyright protection, broader copyright protection (including for temporary copies), protection even without copyright (via technological protection measures), increased liability (eg for internet service providers) and stronger enforcement. This is likely to have significant impacts on various sectors of Malaysia’s economy and society, including universities, libraries, students, consumers and the blind.
The Workshop will enable participants to have a better understanding of the issues and what is at stake, and to exchange information and views.
Participants invited to the Workshop are the private sector and business associations, the open source software community, libraries, academics, public interest groups (human rights groups and those representing consumers and the blind) and trade unions.
Your participation will contribute significantly to the success of the Workshop. You can confirm your participation by returning the reply slip attached by 1 October via email to tw...@twnetwork.org or fax no +603 7955 3220. Further details will be given upon confirmation of participation.
We hope to hear from you soon. Thank you and best wishes,
Yours truly,
Chee Yoke Ling
