SALEM: Stressing the need for "Tamil colonisation," the two-day World Tamil Confederation Conference, which concluded here on Sunday, demonstrated its support to the Tamil Eelam struggle in Sri Lanka and the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Despite the commitment that its platform would not be "misused" to glorify any banned outfits, many speakers who shared the dais with confederation president P. Nedumaran exhibited no qualms about hailing the LTTE's role in the Eelam struggle.

They endorsed the armed struggle, which they said would revive Tamil nationalism.

Open support

A few Tamil activists like Suba. Veerapandian openly declared they would support the Tamil Eelam and the outfit leading the struggle.

Ramadoss assurance

Pattali Makkal Katchi founder leader S. Ramadoss, who was felicitated at the conference, assured the participants that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi would not let the Tamils down.

DPI leader Thol. Tirumavalavan, Tamil Sri Lankan MP Shivaji Lingam and others spoke.

Mr. Nedumaran, presiding over the concluding session, alleged that the State, using the police, resorted to the "undemocratic act" of trying to stall the meet. He urged the Chief Minister to take appropriate action against Salem Police Commissioner K. Gopalakrishnan for his "intimidating" acts. "Can't Tamils hold a conference on Tamil in Tamil Nadu?" A key resolution blamed the Sri Lankan Government for jeopardising the peace process and urged India and other countries to reconsider their stand and recognise the Eelam struggle. It wanted them to extend all assistance to those involved in the struggle. The refugee camps in India lacked adequate facilities, it stated, and demanded they be handed over to the United Nation High Commission for Refugees.
