Dear Kevin,

Nice to see you still picking up matters dear to your heart (though far away from where you are). Indeed the situation in Cameron Highlands is just “tip of the iceberg”, as there are many others happening. Johor is another place, but seems people are quiet bout it. It is unfortunate the Federal Minister of Natural Resources & Environment is not doing his job, and the inefficiency of his ministry is clearly deteriorating, plus he is actually the member of parliament from Cameron Highlands.

In Sarawak, the new Chief Minister has been pressing hard the relevant authority in addressing illegal logging. To date, he made it clear that ther are enforcement officers who are “not knowing what is happening on the ground, knowing but keeping quiet, and knowing & part of the party”.  The CM has also instructed that all forest management units (where logging concessions are awarded) are to be certified in accordance to international standards. Currently, we are talking to Japanese importers who wants to see their supplier (Samling & Shin Yang) from Sarawak to be certified at least via LegalSource (same like that of Lacey Act).

In Sabah, though there has been activities that had damaged the forests over the years, some major improvements has been observed. To date, there is already 21% protected areas in Sabah, with many more coming up. Although the latest move is all about putting Class 2 forest (commercial) into Class 1 (protected), most of these new additions are degraded forest with substantial biodiversity observed.

Regards,

Rahim
