Look at the postings. There is a flurry of excitement, a yearning to
reconnect . . .
. . . and then it has all dissipated. Our lives seem all to complicated to
put us all in the same place at the same time - even for just one more time.
Or is this just the recognition that we do not want to relive the past,
however valuable it was. What will we say after the first 20 minutes of "so
what have you been up to?"
Is there no leader willing to play the occasional fool, to be the focus and
impetus to our merriment. Where is Uncle Mel when we need him most. Who
will be the Chairman of the Entertainment Committee?
I say HE WILL BE THERE!!
And you will be there too. Labor Day. No excuses! Last chance. To sing
Day is Done, mournfully or joyfully, mocking ourselves, we will chant it as
a brachah one last time. To show off our children and grandchildren or to
teach them (they still won't believe it) that there was life before the
internet and even before color TV. A time when people gathered, ran and
played games without joysticks or LAN parties.
I challenge you all to a color war. I will beat everyone at softball. I
will be at the dress-up social. I will have a buddy in the pool (if I can
still pass the 2 laps for the deep water test). I will come as a group and
we will make up our own name. I will sing "one-hundred-bottles-of-beer"
from the bowling alley until the last little hill, whence the tune changes
to the appreciation of even numbers for the driver, and odd numbers (but we
alway skip 7 [poetic license] for the mighty fineness of the same driver) .
. . and wouldn't that driver just about do anything for a bit of quiet.
The quiet is now.
I will be late, of course.

Bobby,
You are ever so gracious, poetic, and thought provoking! I would like to join the gathering on Labor Day 2007, please let me know where and when.
