My grandmother passed away in 1986 at the ripe old age of 94; my
father died earlier, in 1974. My family moved to New City, Rockland
County, in 1969, and I was furious with them for moving because, among
other reasons, we would no longer go to the bungalow colony--just when
I was about to be a counselor and have some power!! My mom still
lives there, and I know that she runs into some of your parents at the
Y senior activities. I would occasionally run into Beth Rizzotti when
I was home from college, but that was 30 years ago (aarrgh!). I left
NY in 1991 for what was supposed to be a temporary stay in California,
and I'm still here in San Diego. I'm a law professor and a single mom
to my beautiful daughter Charlotte, named for my grandmother. Mara
lives in Rockland County now, too, and Shari lives in Phoenix.
I have tons of photos and memories--alas, no scanner. I too can still
sing all the songs (how does she know that, people say), but my Kovod
award disappeared ages ago.
I have an elderly uncle who lives in Yorktown Heights, and about 8 or
10 years ago, we finally took a ride to where the bungalows used to
be. I'd put it off forever because someone had told me not to go, it
was too depressing (can't remember who--maybe Beth?). If I didn't
remember the route so well, I wouldn't have recognized it--I prefer
the photos and my memories.
If I were in NY, I'd definitely try to make the reunion.
Thanks for the pleasure. Feel free to write.
With affection, Ilene
