Hello supporters of Talking Radical,
On this week's show, I interview Saima Desai, Dave Gray-Donald, and
Sharmeen Khan. They are all long-time grassroots media-makers – mostly
in projects towards the more activist and movement-grounded end of the
sector. For the last five years, Desai has been the editor of 50
year-old movement magazine *Briarpatch*. Gray-Donald is a former
publisher of *Briarpatch*, is currently a board member and volunteer
editor at *The Media Co-op* and is centrally involved in *The Grind*, a
new free publication in Toronto. Khan has been active in lots of
projects over the years, including in the community radio sector, and
her main media involvement since 2005 has been as a co-founder and
editorial collective member of *Upping the Anti: A Journal of Theory and
Action*.
They talk with me about their work, about the current state of
grassroots media in so-called Canada, and about their vision for what we
need to be doing to strengthen both media and movements that are
oriented towards justice and collective liberation.

As I indicated in the update that I sent at the beginning of the year
(
https://talkingradical.ca/2023/01/01/big-changes-for-talking-radical/),
this tenth anniversary episode of Talking Radical Radio is also the
final episode (though I'm leaving open the possibility of reviving the
show in a new form at some later point). Thank-you so much for your
support over the years!
This update list will remain active -- as I said at the beginning of
January, Talking Radical didn't begin with the show and it isn't ending
with the show. My work will continue to include a focus on social
movements and communities-in-struggle in so-called Canada, and I will
continue to share that side of what I do over the list. I'm not sure yet
what exactly that will look like, but it will mean a reduced frequency
and probably a somewhat different character to these emails. If you wish
to unsubscribe -- which I would completely understand -- follow the
instructions in the footer of the email.
A couple of listeners and supporters of the show have suggested that I
write something talking about the practical side of making Talking
Radical Radio and about lessons I have learned from this work over the
last ten years, so likely the next time you hear from me over this list
will be to share that with you.
Thanks, as always, for listening!
