Hello supporters of Talking Radical!
I'd hoped to have a new "Learning from Organizers" interview to share with you today, but unfortunately that will have to wait until next week. But I wanted to send out an update today nonetheless to pass along two pieces of important news from The Media Co-op, the outlet that has in recent years published a lot of the work I share on this list and where I am an editor and board member.
The first is to let you know that our AGM is happening on Sunday, December 8 at 3pm, and it would be great if you could attend. AGMs for organizations that you aren't involved in aren't always the most exciting way to spend your time, but we're hoping that folks will be interested in hearing our guest speaker – Jeff Shantz, a radical criminologist who regularly writes for us about police violence in Canada. For more details on the meeting and how to join, see here.
We are also currently running a sustainer drive. Changes at our credit union meant that we lost a number of regular donors. Our ability to continue paying grassroots journalists for their work depends on rebuilding that steady, ongoing source of funding. You can learn more here. And you can set up a recurring donation via PayPal. Make sure you click the "Make this a monthly donation" box! And, yes, it says "Donate to The Dominion," which is our legal name and the name of the publication that The Media Co-op emerged from almost two decades ago.
Since our fundraiser in the spring, we've published stories on things like resistance to Canadian mining in Guatemala, the "overtly colonial" archaeology in the Toronto area obscuring Indigenous history, a key activist in the long struggle for justice for residents of Africville in Halifax, the fight for access to surgical abortions in New Brunswick, resistance to keffiyeh bans, lessons from a long-time homelessness and anti-poverty organizer, as well as our ongoing coverage of police-involved deaths across the country.
Thanks for reading, and I'll be back in touch next week with a new interview!
