Dear Chris,

Imogene would fit for surveillance system in protracted conflict context
(people tends to reduce humanitarian activities to big emergencies but
actually that not the biggest part of the activities). In a surveillance
system, the focus is to implement a common referential and more simple
tools (for less technical users) usually do not handle very well
referential integrity (i.e when you do not need just to record but also
to update).

In protracted conflict context, it is usually possible to offer back
office support for data manager

You can have a look at our models. I'll be happy to have your comments.

For surveys during emergencies, when the focus is to collect structured
and actionable information, there is already a good offer of tools that
can be easily configured:

- Regular form: LimeSurvey
- Scanned forms: QueXF
- SMS based message: rapidSMS, and maybe even simpler RapidAndroid
- Smartphone: OpenDataKit

I am attaching here a script that translate (partially) a form from
Limesurvey to Xforms (used by OpenDataKit). Feel free to improve it and
to share it back

Regards,
Edouard

Thanks these are great examples I had not seen!

I think it is especially interesting that imogene works as an Eclipse
plugin. It's an elegant way to help power users, so I'm curious how that
has gone over with less-technical users. I am testing it today, I'm
intrigued that you have the humanitarian-in-the-field User Experience in
mind http://code.google.com/p/imogene/wiki/UserExperience

Quexf is also impressive in its range of applications, I see there is an
entire suite, and they integrate with http://www.limesurvey.org/

Thanks!
