What spirit pervaded India during the British colonial time versus during the post independence era?

 

During the early colonial time, they came basically as traders - mundane and functional nature of early architecture without much response to the Indian context. Other developments also according to the needs (desires) -introduction of new institutions (railway stations, law courts, colleges, hospitals, post offices, etc.)

 

Later when crown took over – needed expressions of identity- power and superiority

 

Post independence - Indian progressive thought, the freedom movement, the influence of Gandhi and Nehru on architecture

Wanted to represent modern India – coming of corbusier to India
