What author Geeta kapoor is trying to portray through this essay is -
how social and political conditions have an affect on art scenario?
She has explained this with reference to the Indian context raising
the issue coming of modernism in Indian art.
Process of modernisation began with the post independence era with the
development of economy as well the political communist parties
supporting the notions of modernity. Freedom of speech and expression
was now a more valid thing. Issues like minority and women right's
were supported. These social changes how the process of modernisation
is linked with them.
The condition of being modern is reflected at an individual as well as
national level. Translating notion of modernity raises important
notions of such as autonomy, identity and authencity.
[But how it does that I am not able to understand?]
As India became the part of global world and integration in the world
economy, Indian artist also felt the surge of internationalism. Mostly
depicting the narrative of national identity now the Indian artist was
able to see something different like the surreal world. Author raises
issues was this the time when it was modernism in Indian art?
This period was of realizing self-confidence and also portrayed a
collective social change getting reflected in the paintings made by
different artist. During the first three decades of 20th century we
have followers of shantiniketan like abindranath tagore, anand
coomaraswamy , nandlal bose, ramkinkar baij etc focusing on bringing
out the realities of Indian world through their paintings. Paintings
by ramkinkar baij gave importance to the ordinary people who can earn
money by working.
With the presence of other countries in the world, the debate on
identity gets raised. Identity can't be seen individualistically with
just budding of one's own dream, it needs to be considered in the form
of progress of one's nation where one can recognise himself in form of
collective identity.
Modern works have a deep subjectivity, which showed a pre-configured
sense of transformation in which they saw society moving towards a
greater democracy.
Considering the Indian scenario there were movements happening. The
coming of Indian people's theatre association (IIPTA) in 1940's was
avant-garde in Indian context. There was break way from brahiminical
resource (Indian tradition) and it was like emerging tradition of the
modern.
In the prime days of socialism, author raises this issue that we need
to re-invent art in futuristic terms so that during the post modern
times we can have a dialogue which has an appropriate historical
significance. [But why so?]
Till 1960's we had paintings expressing social change with the coming
of Progressive Artist Group in Calcutta, Bombay and madras. They
portrayed expressionist realism of different shades depicting the
social change, thus carrying the notion of modernisation. Some of the
artist established themselves in India as cultural symbols and some
left for Paris and London. Artist like Tyeb mehta, Raza, Krishna reddy
in Paris with their language of art became the first signs of
internationalism in India.
The coming time showed birth of symbolic art and its culmination
leading to neotantrism. It was very apt with visual culture of iconic
forms still existing in India. Artist of neotantric group mostly
painted abstract and some of their painting also contributed to ironic
symbolism. By 1978, when abstraction was on decline, the third world
artist, writers and filmmakers moved into magical realism having a
narrative motivating desire. The Indian contemporary art showed
interest in pictorial narration during the 1970's and 80's. During the
1980's we had more of figurative paintings and a lot done by female
artist. In late 1980's The Indian Radical Painter's and Sculptor's
Association attempted a futuristic task by being anti aesthetic.
During this period of 1940's - late 198o's modernism acquired its
definitions with reference to the Indian context. It was not only
through painting but also through theatre, cinema that portrayal of
existing social conditions was done. By virtue of modernity there was
change in the way information was transferred - the mode.
