Hello

As it's such a long time since there's been anything on the list I thought I would take the opportunity to see if any of you were still out there and how you were all doing?

Also, I have a problem with Numbers.

Here’s the thing. I can find some references to how you do various bits and pieces in Numbers with VO, but my problem is that I don’t understand spreadsheets in the first place. Is there anywhere an introduction to Numbers for a complete novice, which won’t confuse a VO user? I mean really basic stuff.

Best to everybody

Adrienne

Adrienne,

I can’t speak to anybody else, but I’m definitely still around. I use my Mac and iPhone every day, though I’m afraid I can’t help you with your Numbers question. Things have been better here, but they will be again. I hope you and yours are well.

Best,
Zack.

Hi Zack

Well, the world is a very different place than it was a year ago, isn’t it?

I find I am using my phone more and more and my Mac less. Mostly, I think, because the dictation is less erratic.

Best

I am still here! Still have my iPhone and both of my Mac’s. First question is when you are using your Numbers, is it on the IOS or Mac OS?

I use Numbers some, but I found out I have been using Excel more on Windows 10 more often. I agree, I have been leaning more to IOS and Windows 10 than Mac OS. I feel that Apple have not focused too much on the Mac OS in the past few years. I feel that they have some major change in the next few years. I think Mac OS will be integrated to an IOS platform one day.

Now using Numbers, it takes a lot of interacting and deinteracting. When you interact with a sheet, and in Navigational mode on the rotor, you can navigate up, down, left and right arrows like using Excel. But when you type in a cell you automatically interact with a cell. So, once you are done, you will need to deinteract with that cell. It takes some getting used to compared to other spreadsheets.

Now when you use Numbers on IOS. You will need to add vertical navigation to your rotor, that way you can navigate up or down by rows. Or flick left or right by columns.

Let us know if that helps you. Thanks!

Oh dear, Daniel, I fear you have overestimated my knowledge of spreadsheets. The vertical navigation thing in the rotor sounds like a useful tip, though.

Perhaps I should just tell you what I would like to do. I am trying to calculate my income for tax purposes. I think what I should do is put the name of the income source in the first column. Clearly, then, I should put the amount of income in the second column. What then do I have to do to get it to total that second column?

See, told you I was completely clueless about this stuff.

Best

Hi Adrienne:
Not Daniel here. And, I confess, my work with spreadsheets has only been in Ms Excell. Perhaps there are similarities in operation/command. For example, if I have a column of numbers I want to add, I go to the column below, and write an "equals" sign. Then I list the addition by letter name, with a plus sign between each. When I've listed all of the columns, I press enter. So, let's say you are adding figures in Column B. Your input would look something like this:

=b2+b3+b4+b5+b6 ...

I have no idea whether Numbers works the same. But, you could give this a try.
Good to hear from you.Hope you and yours are very well.
Best,
Carolyn

Hi Adrienne:
It sure is a different place. Good to hear your cyber voice. The Mac OS has by far left me in the dust. I mostly go back to it to steal things I need to retrieve. And, I find that my iPhone is getting more and more difficult to use for, of all things, phone calls. At&t seems to think it's no big deal. But, my family members who have Verizon have no issue. HMMMM! Still, I wouldn't trade in the accessibility of my 6S for anything. I have to say though that I had a 7, and was not happy with its performance at all. I actually traded down back to 6S.

I hope all are well here.

Hi Adrienne:
Try this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3sNrjO7QsE

There are more detailed videos about Numbers and spreadsheets. But, I'm not finding a lot of text. I did not check this. But, Apple support does a lot of good articles. Support.apple.com or Apple.com/support.

Hope you find some answers here.

Ah well, that’s a bit clearer. I’ll give it a bash. I seem to recall from thirty years ago that the MS and, in those distant days, Claris had different ways of doing equations. Perhaps they have both adopted the same format now. I will find out.

Nice to hear from you too.

I’m sticking with the SE, those 6 and 7s, not to mention the pluses, are all far too big for my poor arthritic hands.

I’ve still got my MBP and iMac, even upgraded them. I still find there are some things which are easier on the big beasties.

All the best

Hoo boy, to do sum in Numbers. I have done that sometime ago. Right now I have a template of a spreadsheet of my monthly bills. But it have been a few years since I started from scratch. I have found it was a bit more tricky than MS Excel at this. But I seem to remember under the Menu there was a way to do a formula and find a total sum of that colulmn.

You said that your 7 is not as good as the 6S? One question on that was, did you get the 32gb version? Performance of that version is slower than the 6S. I have the 256gb version, and absolutely love my iPhone.

Hi Daniel:
My issue wasn't with speed. It was just the feel of the haptic and somehow the screen seemed changed as far as spatial movement. But it was definitely not about processing speed. Also, I really don't like losing the 3.5 jack and having to use a silly adapter just to use my good old Bose headphones. I guess those headphones are not the only thing getting old.:-)

I know what you mean about the haptic feedback. When I'm trying to help other people with the sixes and sevens, I always think the blasted things are broken.

lol. You know you can increase the Haspsic feedback to feel the vibration better? I for one use Bluetooth so I never did miss the 3.5mm headphone jack. I just helped a consumer to get a really good bluetooth headset that only costs $38 and it stays on the ear durning a run. Works really well! Also, if I need to jack in my headphone, I just leave the adapter on the cord on the headphone, no difference for me. lol.

I hardly ever use wired earphones any longer One of the times I would, however, is when I am using my phone to take notes in a meeting. I find that if I have my Apple Watch on and a Bluetooth keyboard connected, Adding Bluetooth headphones into the mix just doesn't work. I never bothered working out whether there was a device limit for Bluetooth connection to the phone, or if it was just that my keyboard was a bunch of cheap rubbish. Still, if you're going to splash out 7 pounds on a keyboard, what do you expect?
Cheers

lol. Was it when the keyboard would type double characters? I find that happens sometimes with IOS 10. Only fix I found is to restart the iPHOne. But yeah. I hope they come out with a hardwired connection like the iPad Pro does. Now that would be an ultimate computer for me.

Daniel:
Often, simply turning voiceover off and then on again fixes the problem, rather than doing a full power down. Hope this is helpful

Did that work for you? I tried that a few times, but it still did double characters. Like this. Hhooww aarree yyoouu ttooddaayy?? lol. But it could be just me tho.

Nah, it’s just one of those things. Often if you switch off the keyboard and re-pair it the problem clears. Easier than powering down the phone. x

Oddly enough, it worked every time. All I need to do whatever my keyboard decided to take doubles is turn voiceover off and turn it back on again and everything straightened out I guess in a way that doesn't make sense because that shouldn't have any bearing on the letters. But it seems to work for me when something works I guess I don't question why :-) have a great day
