Should killing be penalized with killing? Should Michigan have the death penalty?

I myself have always been against the death penalty. There are several cases where a man (or woman) could be innocent to a crime and their innocence isn't proven until it is too late. This system is far from perfect and it still shows to this day. Instead of the death penalty other measures could be taken that may not cost tax payers much money; maybe even less. I think that if someone were to murder a person that person should be penalized with having to spend the rest of his or her life severing the grieving family. In my opinion that isn't cruel or unusal and the criminal will gain the possibility to learn from their mistake. Of course there should be rules regarding such a punishment, as well as some type of way to either keep an eye on him and a set amount of hours. There should be some type of way for the person to atone. A quick death doesn't solve anything.

I personally do not think that the death penalty is right. If the state kills a person for murdering someone, wouldn't they be just as guilty as the person they're killing?

I disagree. In my opinion, having the aforementioned murderer serving the grieving family would not only cause undue stress to said family, but there is also the chance that the murderer would kill again. While yes, there are innocent people who have been given the death penalty, and it is a terrible thing, the wrongful conviction rate is 4.1%. It's not that high now and if we reformed the system, it would be even lower.

The death penalty is a permanent solution to a crime that cannot be undone once it is enacted, because once someone is killed, there's no going back. I believe the death penalty is too strong of a punishment, considering that if someone were to be framed in a crime, and was found innocent, they would already be dead. This form of punishment also completely prevents the criminal from learning from his actions, what it does, is it puts the criminal out of his or her misery with the same mindset.

I like the fact that Michigan does not have the death penalty because I feel that many people have been wrongfully put to death, if someone is put to death but is later proven to be innocent, that's not fair that they had their life taken away for doing nothing wrong.

I personally think its simply a waste of a mind and manpower, the death of someone for whatever their crimes are is perhaps more of a social benefit than anything physical should their crime be heinous enough to have an impact on other peoples lives.

Michigan should not have the death penalty, it is sick to kill someone for killing. Also, there is the chance of wrongful conviction which does not help the situation.

I do believe in the death penalty. I would feel much safer knowing that people who have been convicted of horrible crimes are getting what they deserve.  Just being locked up  is not punishment enough.  Some of the criminals once released get sent right back because they can not handle the real world.  So we will keep paying tax dollars to keep them in prison system and keep filing them through, with no repercussions except being locked up. Again, the victims families? If one of your loved ones. etc was a victim, are you telling me jail time is enough?

I believe that there should be a death penalty. The numbers of crimes being committed is getting ridiculous. Have you ever sat and watched the Detroit news stations with out there being a mention of a murder taking places on any given day. I can't even watch the news anymore because it is so depressing to see where our society is going. I believe if we go back to the old days when someone was found guilty of a crime hang them in the center of town. Make a spectacle of them. This would definitely make people think twice about committing murder. With todays system it takes years for anyone ( in states that have the death penalty) to be killed by lethal injection. Not to mention the cost of the lethal injection. They took someone's life. They took someone's Father, Mother, Sister, Brother, Nephew or Niece away from them. I don't think they can change. If people purposely choose to take someone's life away, they deserve it. They know what the consequences are but they still choose to do it. It would not only help with the budget but it would also help with the overpopulation problems.

I believe Michigan should not have a death penalty. That is just my opinion, but I would like to bring up the cost of the death penalty. There has been cases in which DNA evidence has shown innocence in those who where executed. It also takes away someone's ability to change and be reintegrated in society. The actual monetary cost can also be up to ten times more than if they were convicted for a life sentence. John Oliver did a great take on this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kye2oX-b39E

Not only do I believe Michigan should have the death penalty but the United States as whole should.  Why should the taxpayers be left to support murderous criminals that cannot assimilate themselves into society?  The Unites States leads the world in most incarcerated prisoners, with a vast amount of violent individuals being held at prisons across our country sitting on death row or postponing their executions by pleas of insanity.  It took one year for an international court to conclude the case against Saddam and execute him for war crimes.  Why should murderers in the U.S be an exception?

I disagree with the death penalty. I believe that when someone murders another person they should have to spend the rest of their life in prison where they will be forced to reflect on their actions. Regardless of the crime committed, I do not believe that we have the right to decide when it is okay to take a life.

I believe that the death penalty should be abolished throughout the country.  I would not be able to be in a jury for a death penalty case, because I vehemently disagree with the state having the right to murder its own citizens, regardless of what terrible things that person has done.

Personally, this just epitomizes the double standard that is our barbaric past... currently our jail and prison system tend to lean more towards incarceration than rehabilitation. When has it ever been shown that placing criminals with other criminals was a good idea? Even more if they actually fully realized the power in a united system rather than a brutally enforced fragment of one. If politics is groups mobilizing, then placing them in jail only propagates clashing egos unless they begin to work together. Our entire world is like this, but the cell rooms furnishings and our perception of its layout change. I digress. The death penalty is the symptom of a bigger problem; poverty and a lack of social, mental and physical support. When society says getting money and women is more important than giving back to society... we might have a problem. So when the persons whom slip through these cracks act out, we don't think "It's just how they were raised" or "what if someone had shown him some kindness before they shot up that school", we think "they're psychopathic, and need of psychiatric help" which ultimately fuels the fire even more. Pump them full of dissociating drugs we say. Come back in a week and tell me how you feel! How ignorant are we! Never questioning if were helping but instead telling them just to hold on for another week, then another, then another. Losing themselves along the way and we come to the conclusion "We did our best, there's nothing more we can do". When in reality they can either 1.) try to find some kind of healthy release from the parts of their BRAIN that aren't functioning at par or 2.) slowly or exponentially increase in internal strife until the well just can't hold any more water. What kinds of crimes does the death penalty actually cover? Repeat Offenders if not also including the first time sex offenders (Whom CLEARLY NEED HELP IN THE NOGGIN), to some of the LARGEST criminals whom under the clinical definition of insanity, continue to end up in jail despite all their precious time in locked away (Which in the mean time our institutions never taught them that a working salary of a burnt out alcoholic that now has to deal with not being able to find a job because of the 2 felony counts of armed robbery after being released: was more important than the huge drug deal pay offs; when 5 years in jail and all the crap money can buy with your closest "ride or die" friends when you get out) It's almost like once you go orange you'll never go back! Us "law abiding citizens" would never think maybe we need to help these people.... because all we see is the death and the violence and the war. But ultimately statistics only show us that the less poverty (and there for the unquenched needs such as food and shelter) , the less Mental abuse, greater social support, and plethora of creative ways to express ourselves has NOTHING to do with that pedophile down the road. If these people weren't lost in the system that created the gaps in the first place, our entire world would be much better off.... the death penalty is a product of our non-understanding. These people are sick and in need of a doctor, not a judge jury and executioner. If the insanity plea exists, whereby those of us that are not mentally fit to determine that they are conscious of their actions as WE have defined them sociologically, in which they are then either sentenced to jail or psychiatric evaluation (which had to have been done in the first place to actually make this type of plea acceptable in a court room) then why do we kill them? We put a dog down when it bites some one, never thinking "maybe the owner should've trained them better", and then subsequently reviewing that persons life to see if it was truly THEIR responsibility and lack there of to train the dog which caused it to bite. The dog is also a victim, which we further victimize by misallocating it's actions to it's demeanor rather than it's learned personality and subsequently and unfairly punish it. Likewise, we need to look to our government and it's actions in furthering the mental health of the mentally ill. Psychiatrists seem to be the only doctors whom never actually look at the subject that they are treating (the brain), then passing the literal LOOKING to a psychologist to confirm or deny existence of symptoms and not the actual diseases.

The death penalty has been a debated subject since pretty much the beginning of time. Personally, I think it is circumstantial, but ultimately, I am more strongly opposed to it than not. If someone has murdered or raped or harmed a child in any way, there should be proper consequences (I do not know what they would be), which is an argument to enact the death penalty in the states that is has been abolished in. However, if someone kills someone for the reason that that person killed someone else, it is counteractive. I think that is a last resort mechanism to have to use for serious crimes.

I believe punishing killing with killing is an endless loop - I've been approving the method used in the European Union. Despite committing something as horrible and infamous as a terrorist attack, a person should spend their life thinking about their actions in ending the lives of countless others. But exceptions and exemptions can be given to those who kill a single person, have them spend five or seven years for each life taken. However, with committed terrorist attacks - the person or persons would remain behind bars for life, with extensive security watching over them (heavily armed), if need be.

I think that we should have the death penalty for a punishment for cases such as any kind of abuse, molestation, rape, murder, etc. Although some may argue that you should not punish for murder with murder, if these people are let back out in the world there is a high chance that they will commit the same crime again and that will put more people's lives in danger. I think that if people are getting punished for these crimes by the death penalty, there will not be as many people committing the crimes that get punished in this manner.
The only problem that I see with the death penalty is someone getting killed for a crime that they did not commit. If they are going to kill the person that is accused of committing the crime, there needs to be solid evidence that they were the one that committed that crime.

Regarding the death penalty I feel it is difficult to answer the question should killing be penalized with killing just because there are so many different situations in regards to murder. If you take a look at the system today putting someone on death row takes years for the death penalty to even be put into action. Today could the death penalty be considered cruel and unusual punishment?

I feel like the death penalty is an unnecessary resource used by our government. I believe we should practice more use of rehabilitation on convicted criminals to essentially better them in our society to make them productive in it. Studies have also shown cases with the death penalty cost substantially more than the one with out. This reason is why I see as an unnecessary resource we used to give out quick justice.

I believe that the death penalty should no longer be utilized. There are too many people that are wrongly killed that were later found out to be not guilty. The numbers are small at about 2%, but that is 2% too many. I think that those who would have originally required the death penalty should have to live with their guilt in jail and have no chance of parol.

Personally I do not think that we should have the death penalty. If as a society we feel killing is wrong, then how can we justify killing as a punishment? In a case, there is so many things that could go wrong. In some cases that I looked into, people were wrongly accused and convicted and sentenced to death because of errors such as police misconduct, racial judgments, overlooked evidence, forced confessions, false witness testimonies and disappearing evidence. I understand why some people think the death penalty is the ultimate punishment, but why should these criminals get the easy way out. Wouldn't a better punishment be for them to suffer in the prison system and live with the guilt of their crimes every day? Death almost seems as an easy escape. What do you guys think?

I do not think the state has the authority to take away life. Though it is allowed under the Constitution, I think that far too many executions have been botched, and that the only smart thing to do is end the practice of capital punishment. A death sentence places a much larger burden on the taxpayer than a life sentence. Keeping someone in jail is expensive. Keeping someone in jail and paying for twenty years worth of appeals is much more expensive.

I can't make up my mind on this issue and was just talking about it after reading a news article of a baby being murdered. It seems like the death penalty is a suitable punishment for someone who would kill another person, but what about all the times that people are falsely convicted and spend 20+ years in jail and end up being proven innocent? An innocent life would've been taken, which is basically the government committing murder.

I'm not completely against the death penalty. I honestly have little to no sympathy for those who choose to take another person's life for whatever reason. It's not right but I also believe two wrongs don't make a right, giving the killer the death penalty won't bring the other person back so it helps nothing and also I think it's a good idea for the killer to be able to go to jail for the rest of their life so they're able to really sit back reflect, feel bad and hopefully find god and repent for their actions.

Facing the problem of overcrowding in our prisons is something of a serious issue that should be addressed. The death penalty is something that should be utilized by the government to keep the people safe. If someone is going to commit homicide, they will continue to kill no matter what. Why should we waste tax payer money to feed and give this a warm bed to sleep in. That person should rot in the ground for their crimes. I think that the death penalty is a tool that should be utilized by our government.

I agree, I believe the death penalty should be in full effect throughout the United States.  When I was younger I thought having the death penalty was not the best option for people who have committed terrible crimes because I thought that having the criminal live the rest of their life in a jell cell would be much worse than killing.  Now, my view on this has completely changed since I am now a tax paying citizen.  Why should we, good people of the United States ever have to pay for these criminals to continue to live.  We are paying for their everyday needs including food, clothes, etc.

I think it should depend on how dramatic your crime is for the death penalty. If you are in prison for tax fraud then no you shouldn't be killed. But if you are in there because you are a serial killer and you are sent to jail for life then yes I think you should be on death penalty. You have killed numerous people on purpose and we shouldn't be making people spend tax money to make sure you have food and clothing and are living comfortable for the rest of your life.

I believe that the death penalty is a necessary evil in our society today. The death penalty does have some draw backs just like everything else does; a big one would be wrongfully convicting an innocent person and sentencing them to death. While our justice system can be flawed at times some crimes must be payed for by the ultimate price, the perpetrators life. In my opinion the death penalty should not only be in place for murderers but also for rapists and child molesters; These crimes are unsettling and need to be stopped and the death penalty would make those attempting them to think  twice, therefore I also think Michigan should enforce these laws.

I feel that death for death is a just punishment. However, with all of the red tape that prisons need to go through to sentence and execute someone, it is a very timely and costly process. The process needs to be redesigned before more states should adopt the law.

i was originally for the death penalty but after doing more research and looking into it my view point has changed i don't think the death penalty is worth it. its super expensive to put some one death row. i think its better to just have them suffer with facing the rest of their life in prison. also i don't think Michigan should have the death penalty after they put an innocent man on death row and killed him when he did not do the crime. states can not have any kind of error in this process but have messed up multiple times before. there for there should be no death penalty in Michigan.

I believe that the death penalty is wrong. I don't understand how the government or the public can rationalize that killing people for crimes that they did (or didn't) commit is an appropriate response. Rehabilitation programs and transformative justice is where our judicial branch needs to move because people aren't going to get better in an often toxic environment, and no person is inherently just bad or good. Grey area exists in all of us and our legal system needs to reflect that. The death penalty is approaching people as though they exist in binaries as good or bad, and the state should not be allowed to murder people or make judgement upon people without looking at the sum of their personhood or the context for why some people end up in jail and others don't.

I believe the death penalty should be legal in some very extreme instances.  Such as a mass shooter or someone who has been proven to commit a terrible atrocity.  With that being said in a lot of cases i would be against it, but it should be held as a reserve for extreme times.

I'm not against death penalty. It would be a huge waste of time and money if we just lock those who committed nonredeemable crimes behind the walls for decades and not punish them further. It's not fair to the victims' families and victim themselves, but indeed, some criminals can be falsely accused and got sentenced to death while they shouldn't. It all depends on a fair judicial system and good enough evidences, which may not be absolutely perfect everywhere, including Michigan.

This is a tough one. Generally I feel like the death penalty is pretty risky considering there's always that slight chance that some how the person is actually innocent and this is all a mistake. With that being said death is irreversible  and once it's done there is no taking it back. On the other hand, there are some really evil people out there that kill/rape people and have absolutely no remorse and are proud of what they have done. THOSE people definitely need to die with no questions asked. So I guess it really just depends on the case and circumstance but I do think that it "useful" in some ways.

I don’t believe the death penalty should be used. I think to have at least one innocent person wrongly convicted and put to death is one too many and there have been multiple cases of this happening. And for those who are rightfully convicted deserve to live locked up with the consequences of their actions. There is an argument that it’s cheaper to use the death penalty than keep a criminal in prison for life, but in an article I read in my Sociology class in high school, a study showed that it was actually more expensive to execute someone (cost of lethal injection, legal costs, etc).

I am personally against the death penalty but not for the same reason as most people. I do not think that we should give people the death penalty because I think that they should have to sit in a jail cell for the rest of their life. Giving someone the death penalty is almost like the easy way out for them.

I think killing should be penalized with killing, especially in the case that someone has killed more than one person. With that said, yes I think Michigan should have the death penalty. However I do think it should be proved beyond a doubt that the person is guilty because its unjustifiable to put someone to death if they are innocent. I also believe the person should be analyzed psychologically before, they cant be using death to get out.

I believe the death penalty should be abolished because it is a waste of money, mostly because of all the trials these people have to go through (it is way less expensive to keep someone in prison for life). It does not deter crime, it is unconstitutional, and there are cases of innocent people being executed or waiting to be executed.

In my opinion, an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind. Killing somebody because they are a killer does not make killing more right. Just because the government is doing it does not make it morally acceptable. Furthermore, I also think it's too permanent of a punishment. Putting a murderer to death may stop them from killing, but there is no punishment for them. They're dead. If anything, I've always thought a killer deserves to be in prison for some absurd amount of time so they can think about what they've done and why they shouldn't do it. And after a long time of good behavior, maybe that person could emerge from prison as a productive member of society.

I have mixed feelings about the death penalty and I cant quite say I can agree to just one way or another. I personally would like to see a few studies done on the outcomes of having a death penalty oppose to banning the death penalty.  Does it actually lower the crime rate, other words does it prove that people are less likely to commit crimes due to the death penalty as a result. The crime rate seems to continuously rise and we need a solution, I would prefer it was not the death penalty but people seem so still commit murder all the time and I wish there was a way to slowly lower that number!

I am against the death penalty, because I believe that the life of everyone should be respected. The one is guilty should obviously punished, but I don't think the death penalty is the correct form of punishment. Two wrongs don't make a right, and the pain of one death can not be erased by killing the murderer.

The death penalty is a touchy subject and makes me feel sick whenever it is discussed. Some people commit crimes that almost seem unforgivable, but one always must think that that person can repent for their sins and change their whole ideology while serving their life long prison sentence. There should be some rare cases when the death penalty should be applied. If someone committed a mass murder or tortured/raped/killed innocent people for no reason, then this person should be lethally injected and put to death. This subject is very touchy and it is very difficult to determine whether it is right or wrong

I think, no matter what happened no one should have a right to take away another human beings life. This includes the death penalty, who are we to determine how much a life matters and how we can take it based off a decision they made. It is not okay.

I do believe in the death penalty.  There are some criminals that have no soul or morals.  I have no respect for a person that rapes and murders a child, and I do not believe they should ever be part of society again.
Obviously strict policies adn procedures would have to be in place as to not send an innocent man to death.

Im not sure if i support the death penalty however, people who kill others should be punished in my opinion instead of killing them. They should be sentenced 30+ years if what they committed is at that level. The death penalty is taking another persons life away other then making them pay for what they did. I get getting killed is a big punishment but we should not be able to kill people through the death penalty.

I also believe that there should be no death penalty. In all cases, it is wring to kill someone out of intent to kill, but that person is still a person. A rapist is still a person. Throw their life in prison forever, fine by me, but a person's life should never be taken away from them.

I am against the death penalty since I think there are many people currently incarcerated that are innocent. I see it to often innocent people being released from jail after serving years. Courts, prosecutors and juries wrongfully convict people all of the time. How many have been put to death?

I think solitary confinement is way worse of a punishment than the death penalty.  As humans we need human interaction, if we are left alone in a room with limited light and no interaction for long periods of time humans for insane.  Killing a person "humanely" basically meaning no one will argue that it was too harsh, costs more than keeping them in jail.  So I say for animals like Larry Nasser and people who would be put on death row we just lock them in a small room by themselves and let that serve justice.

I don't support the death penalty. Although we'd all like to believe that the law is always fair and just, that is not true. There could be even one out of 100 suspects that was wrongfully accused of murder.  Should he/she be put to death even if he/she did not commit the crime? I think sentencing someone to death is just glorified murder...

It all depends. I think depending on the crime there for sure needs to be a death penalty. People get away with so much crime and anyone can say they have changed. Anyone can fake a good behavior if they have a certain agenda. With a death penalty, people will start thinking twice about there actions and realize that there are consequences. However, there are innocent people who should not get the death penalty, I feel there should be some type of process, a better process to determine who gets what.

Through U.S. history innocent people, especially African Americans, have been executed because of the death penalty with no true evidence.  African Americans have been killed by the thousands because of racism.  The death penalty is not right and it's not fair to kill an innocent person based on the color of his skin, lies, sabotage and racism.  I do not believe in the pure evil of the death penalty under no circumstances.  The government does not have the right to kill.  This is way too much power.  The Constitution gives everyone the right to equality, peace, and happiness.

As with everything, there are inequalities and injustices. I don't think we can say that the death penalty is bad because innocent black people have died because of it. Innocent people of all races have probably died as a result of this. However, many evil, predatorial murderers have also suffered at the hands of this penalty. Is this ok?

I most definitely believe in the death penalty when it is appropriate. I feel that there should be certain circumstances that make you eligible for the death penalty. Such as how many people that person has killed and also what the motive was for killing that person. I strongly believe that Michigan should have the death penalty under the regulation that I stated above. I also feel that this will bring closure and justice to the victims family.

I am for the death penalty in theory, but I do not think we should have it at the state level.  There have been to many cases of people that were serving life sentences or on death row turn out to be innocent. If there is absolute proof like a video or photos then I think it would be ok, but i don't think the risk of killing an innocent person is worth it.

I believe in the death penalty if someone is found guiltily of killing someone else they should be put to death. It has to be determined that the murder of someone else is found guiltily of first degree murder. I don’t believe we should be paying for Individuals in jail for there lifetime because they choose to kill someone.

I grew up in a very religious family. All along I believed that only god can take your life. Murder is a sin. Now, I changed my mind about God and religion, but i still believe it is immoral to take someone's life. After all don't they commit a murder as well? it doesn't matter who they kill, an innocent or a criminal. the blood will be on their hands and consciousness. There are plenty of punishments to implement as an alternative to death penalty. For example -  work in areas where other citizens would not want to work, while still under supervision. This way they would make for their own bread while still imprisoned. killing the criminals is not a solution. It degrades our society.
