Personally, I think some college should be free, while other college should not. What I mean by this is, I think that community college with a 2-year program be free to all that live in its county. I think this because it means you can do all pre-reqs before transferring to a 4-year program and since you tax dollars pay for it why shouldn't it be free like high school. On the other, any private or state universities, should lower their cost but remain with the current pay system that is in place.

Some of the third worlds countries have their full after high school education for free to all people, well!
If the education instutions at least reduced the fees, i believe more folks will be able to receive education. it will encourage a lot of people enroll in schools. however, that will increase the ratio of educated people in the united state.

Unfortunately this will never be free. Teachers need to get paid, and we are in so much debt as a country that no one would ever approve something like this. That being said, I think education SHOULD be free, but is there any means to make that happen realistically? No.

It is difficult to live a stable life without some form advanced education. I believe that gen ed courses that tend to lean off of topic to most people's field of study should be free, or even omitted to save money and time for students. Schools can take advantage of students needing an education these days. Students supply themselves, teach themselves, and pretty much do everything themselves and still pay intense costs for their education. I think that they should supply students more and give a higher quality of teaching if they are to receive the high amounts of money they get today.

As much as I would love to say "Yes! I would love for college to be free!? I have to say that I don't agree with the Idea because as great as it would be to go to school for free, nothing is really free. Creating free college would just mean higher taxes, Which also means that though you may not be paying for it, someone else is. Which would also mean that after you graduate, you would still be paying the taxes for other kids to go to school.

I feel that a free college would be a good idea. If we didn't have to pay for college there would be so many more people going to college. Meaning more education for the people who haven't been taught well. Us current college kids wouldn't have to work and stress out about book fines or even take out loans, be honest who wants to pay for that? Nobody, I'd rather save that money and put it toward other things.

I think this is one of those ideas that sounds great in theory, but when looked at closer it gets messy very quickly. This would be very hard to do with a country as large as the United States and would require a hike in taxes which would disgruntle many Americans. I absolutely think that college costs are too high right now but I think making college free is too extreme of a shift that would have lots of unintended consequences. I'm all for reducing costs where possible, but not free college.

Free college is obviously very exciting yet controversial. All millennials and older citizens re-entering college would take this as an encouraging offer to get an education because of the fewer consequences, mainly being in debt for 30+ years if attending a university. If I held a position to give my opinion about this idea, I would recommend allowing two free years at a community college that is of convenience, so at least they can get their associates.

College should be free. Everyone should be able to have a college education regardless of how much money their family/they make. But on the other side, professors need to get paid, books have to be bought, maintenance of schools is needed, etc. I believe this could never happen, unfortunately.

I think free college is one of the worst ideas. It would cost about $70 billion/year, which would cause a huge increase in taxes. It would also give a free education to those who can already afford to pay for college. And what about those who do not graduate college? Roughly half of students who enter college, drop out in the first year, so about half of that $70 billion would be completely wasted on college dropouts.

In Brazil they have free colleges the public ones, people don't pay a fee like the public ones here, but they have a test called vestibular (Veryy hard)people who acchieve the highest grades on these tests enter in this college. The College maintain itselft by the taxes that people pay, and they are usually in the best colleges in Brazil because the people who enter in that University are hardworking students or geniuses. However In Brasil there are also private colleges, which is the majority of colleges.

I think the U.S. need to take funding from the over inflated military budget and wire the money towards making college either more affordable or free for all students because eduction is the key to success.

i agree with having free college. other countries do it. the students have to pick a field and it's basically continuing education from high school. the tax the people pay will go to bettering the future generation. that is what most parents would say they want for their child. a better place to live in the world. inspire the young to make an impact on the world and do their best.

I don't necessarily agree with it being free. I think that a lot of students would go to school, and waste a lot of money that someone (meaning all of us taxpayers) put in the pot for education. Then again, I think a lot of people could and would really use it because they are motivated. I feel if someone works for something, they begin to appreciate it more. If one is paying for their own college, they may be more apt to do well, and succeed.

Even though I would love to have access to free college, once you thunk about it, it doesn't sound that good. It all really comes down to costs, because as we all know that nothing is really ever free. The cost for teachers, and all other expenses that a college may have would have to be paid for by something, and if we would not be paying then it will come from an outside source, and we would all see a huge increase in taxes. Lastly, even if its only on the community college level, there are so many of these institutions in the state of Michigan, and around the nation that we would have a huge bill to foot. Even though it may have its perks and appeal, free college would not be a good idea.

I believe that college should be free so it is easier to get jobs and for younger adults to not stress so much about having to pay and save just for a college degree.

Everyone loves the idea of something being free. However, there isn't really a realistic expectation in our education system. Our universities need funding for everything. If we don't pay into the services we are utilizing it will no longer exist in the way we would want it to. A lot of students drop out without obtaining a degree and the increasing taxes to make free education possible will skyrocket. The thought of it is nice but in reality we would end up paying for it either way.

I think that maybe not "free" but I do think college is EXTREMELY overpriced. So many people miss out on an education because they can not afford it.

I think college being free would be a great thing because not a lot of people have enough money to afford college and some people out there miss the opportunity of getting better education because of the money situation.

I think if college was free then you have to keep a B average for the class to be free. This way people would have to try and not miss class or play on their phones . Before you can get free college you have to pass an entry test to show them you are serious about college.

I don't necessarily think that college should be free. While it would be great for people like me who have to work three jobs to get by, if it's free like K-12 schooling is, people are likely to take it less seriously, especially since it's not required by law (in Michigan). I think a much better option is the trend that's been gaining traction where students can knock out some college credits while still in high school and they don't have to pay for it. Ultimately, the best option would be to use the junior and senior years of high school to complete the general education requirements for a college degree, or implement an optional 5-year high school program where students graduate with high school and associates degrees.

Nothing is free. Someone pays for it and that would be the taxpayers. In these countries where college is considered "free" they take a high percentage out of their citizens taxes to fund this. Would you be okay with giving away 70%+ of your hard earned money to the government? I sure wouldn't be and especially wouldn't want to pay for it if I myself didn't have an interest in attending college.

I disagree that college should be free. Nothing in life is free. One of my leading thoughts to this discussion is that it should me more affordable. Or one idea is that it is based off of your income, kind of like a better grant system.

I don't think colleges should be free, but I believe it should be cheaper. If college was free you would just get people who are doing whatever they want because they don't want to start a career yet. So paying higher taxes for people to just hang around at college for a while because its free isn't right. However it being cheaper will give people that can't afford $20,000+ a year a chance to get a job and really make a difference in the community like they want to and not stuck in a social class with no ability to get out.

I would absolutely love free college. I don't get any help from my parents and no financial aid, so I sit in a hard spot trying to pay for my own classes. I choose to personally attend a community college because I did not want to be paying for student loans the rest of my adult life. I work 3 jobs and take a full load of credits each semester. I just feel very stuck, working so much just for schooling. If schooling was paid for I would feel a lot less pressure and I wouldn't mind paying a tax so that other students could feel the same way later on in life.

I think a 2 year of community college should be free unless the student has a free ride to a whole 4 years of university because college is expensive community or university.

I think college, university or vocational school should be based on income and there should be a cap at the overall cost of a year no matter the school-if it’s a state college. This is way to expensive. How is anyone supposed to be able to afford this for themselves or their children.

Free college would be amazing! personally I would be much more enthusiast and encouraged to continue because id have less to lose and a lot more to win but sometimes thinking of how much money and time is put into a college career is draining and can really mess with the motivation,. even if it was included in taxes, i don't think it'd be a bad idea and the board could make regulations so that people don't misuse the advantage.

I don’t think college should be 100% free because so many people would take advantage of it. College is a choice it’s not mandatory like grade school. I believe it should be a lot cheaper than what it is now. The government needs to provided for a percentage of the tuition. Not like FASFA where we become in debt.
