Shoghi Effendi was especially insistent that the American
Baha'is be aware of the degree of materialism engulfing the nation,
so that perhaps, some of them, could distance themselves from the
values and thinking of their peers. How tragic that so few of them
have paid any attention to his urgent pleas and repeated
warnings. "The steady and alarming deterioration in standards of
morality as exemplified by the appalling increase of crime, by
political corruption in ever-widening and ever higher circles, by the
loosening of the sacred ties of marriage, by the inordinate craving
for pleasure and diversion, and by the marked and progressive
slackening of parental control, is no doubt the most arresting and
distressing aspect of the decline that has set in, and can be clearly
perceived, in the fortunes of an entire nation..[i.e. U.S.A.]" "It
is this same cancerous materialism......which Baha'u'llah in
unequivocal and emphatic language denounced in His Writings,
comparing it to a devouring flame and regarding it as the chief
factor in precipitating the dire ordeals and world-shaking crisis
that must necessarily involve the burning of cities and the spread of

A Baha'i who visited Haifa told me that Shoghi Effendi remarked
that the final cataclysm might well destroy the Baha'i monuments and
buildings. After the second World War Shoghi Effendi said that in the
Last Days there would be riots in the cities of America, perhaps
because of racial strife and economic disasters. "...the burning
of cities, the contamination of the atmosphere of the earth -- these
stand out as the signs and portents that must either herald or
accompany the retributive calamity." Shoghi Effendi in Message to
America,April 1947
One evening the Guardian began speaking about the coming
calamities. He was very emphatic and after he left, Ruhiyyih Khanum
and the members of the International Council stated they had never
heard him speak with so much force or so decisively. He said the
coming calamity would be worse than war. Cities would evaporate;
especially in the cities where it is hardest to teach the Faith such
as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. People would lose all their
possessions and homes overnight - would simply evaporate......The
U.S. would suffer the most because it was the most
materialistic......After the coming calamity, the U.S. will fulfill
the prophecy of Abdul-Baha that the U.S. would lead the nations
because of its suffering......I asked the Guardian if the calamity
could be averted. He replied, "No." I asked if it would be all North
America? He said mainly the U.S. We are approaching the darkest
[hour] before dawn. No one knows when this can happen.but anytime. It
will come fast. Anything that happens, even to the destruction of the
Temples and Shrines, will be for the good of the Faith.'...... It
will come swift and sudden and whole cities will be leveled to the

From the beginning of his role as Guardian, Shoghi Effendi tried
in vain to awaken the Baha'is throughout the world to the dangers of
the overwhelming materialism that had engulfed most of the world.
Often Abdu'l-Baha described the dangers we face, but it seems that
only a few take His warnings seriously. Since then the moral
regression of the peoples of the world, the cancer of materialism,
and the destruction of the ecology, have steadily worsened. Still
only a few understand that we must all change our ways of thinking
completely, dedicate our lives to God, and make the tremendous
sacrifices required to change the world. Of course, the majority
of the Baha'is, like the rest of humanity, have ignored and will
continue to ignore, the dire warnings of the Founders of their Faith,
because of attachment to this materialistic civilization. Some have
told me that they are "unafraid", that they will remain in the large
cities which Shoghi Effendi said are in extreme danger, which is
simply a way of saying that they do not believe.

Those who keep track of what is happening in the economy and the
environment know that the situation is extremely serious now.
Moreover, our current national leaders have managed to alienate most
of the nations of the world against America, and the lack of sound
judgement of those leaders threatens our nation and the world. In
America now there is a serious polarization of the population, and as
in other nations throughout the world the fundamentalists with their
limited grasp of reality, have gained the upper hand. Both the U.S.
and Russia have about 6,000 atomic bombs each, (I understand) and the
nuclear
arsenal of China is an unknown. Anything can happen at any time, and
as the Guardian said, in his interpretation of the Writings, it will
come suddenly and unexpectedly. The wise will move far from any large
city, and if my research is correct concerning a shift in the earth's
axis, it would also be prudent to live a good distance from any large
body of water and at 1,000 ft altitude or more.

Even though the immediate future will be extremely difficult for
everyone on earth for many years, the future of humanity is very
bright according to the Word of God revealed in the Holy Books.
"There lay concealed within the Holy Veil, and prepared for the
service of God, a company of His chosen ones who shall be manifested
unto men, who shall aid His Cause, who shall be afraid of no one,
though the entire human race rise up and war against them. These are
the ones who, before the gaze of the dwellers on earth and the
denizens of heaven, shall arise and, shouting aloud, acclaim the name
of the Almighty, and summon the children of men to the path of God,
the All-Glorious, the All-Praised."

will have, by an act of His Will, raised up a race of men the nature
of which is inscrutable to all save God, the All-Powerful, the Self-

That is the time when people will enter the Cause of God in troops,
not now. As the world situation grows darker, and humanity has turned
to God when they witness the failure of this materialistic
civilization, that will be the time it will be easier to teach the
Faith, the Cause of God, although it may be under another name than
Baha'i, it will be the final Revelation of the Dispensation of the
Greatest Name.
As the Guardian said in his Haifa notes: 'Near the end of the
formative period the nations will unite of their own volition and
with the non-commitant expansion of the Cause become merged into the
fabric of the World Order of Baha'u'llah. There will be another
Manifestation before this will happen.' Wm Allison notes 1957
"I swear by God! That which hath been destined for him who aideth My
Cause excelleth the treasures of the earth." "Whoso openeth his lips
in this day, and maketh mention of the name of his Lord, the hosts of
Divine inspiration shall descend upon him from the heaven of My name,

Christ's followers fully believed that the end times would occur in
their own life times, that Christ would return in their own life
times.
Such apocalyptic beliefs are worse than useless because they give
people an excuse for not changing things in the here and now because
'the end of times' is just around the corner.
Why are cultist/religionists so universally prone to such antiquated
and obsolete apocalyptic beliefs? Because they have so devalued life
here on earth and put so much value on an imaginary next life that
they have to put their faith in apocalyticism because they have
deferred responsibility to be involved in change in the here and now.
All their eggs are in a false and non-existent supernatural basket, to
the detriment of the natural world and it turn of humanity. Sad.

Howdy Jim,
The crime rate has been steadily dropping for some time but our
awareness of any remaining crime has been steadily increasing because
of the internet and because that's what sells the news.
The media focuses on negative news stories because that's what people
will turn the TV and radio on to see, to hear. Do you ever see the
media use a positive news story to get people to turn on the news
later? Almost never.
As artificial spirituality to do with religious triumphalism and
apocalypticism are shown to be false it may seem that people are
turning away from spirituality but in reality they are only turning
away from artifice, from religion. Religion and spirituality are not
synonymous.

PROTOCOL No. 23
1. That the peoples may become accustomed to obedience it is necessary to inculcate lessons of humility and therefore to reduce the production of articles of luxury. By this we shall improve morals which have been debased by emulation in the sphere of luxury. We shall re-establish small master production which will mean laying a mine under the private capital of manufactures. This is indispensable also for the reason that manufacturers on the grand scale often move, though not always consciously, the thoughts of the masses in directions against the government. A people of small masters knows nothing of unemployment and this binds him closely with existing order, and consequently with the firmness of authority. For us its part will have been played out the moment authority is transferred into our hands. Drunkenness also will be prohibited by law and punishable as a crime against the humanness of man who is turned into a brute under the influence of alcohol.
2. Subjects, I repeat once more, give blind obedience only to the strong hand which is absolutely independent of them, for in it they feel the sword of defense and support against social scourges .... What do they want with an angelic spirit in a king? What they have to see in him is the personification of force and power.
3. The supreme lord who will replace all now existing rulers, dragging in their existence among societies demoralized by us, societies that have denied even the authority of God, from whose midst breeds out on all sides the fire of anarchy, must first of all proceed to quench this all-devouring flame. Therefore he will be obliged to kill off those existing societies, though he should drench them with his own blood, that he may resurrect them again in the form of regularly organized troops fighting consciously with every kind of infection that may cover the body of the State with sores.
4. This Chosen One of God is chosen from above to demolish the senseless forces moved by instinct and not reason, by brutishness and not humanness. These forces now triumph in manifestations of robbery and every kind of violence under the mask of principles of freedom and rights. They have overthrown all forms of social order to erect on the ruins the throne of the King of the Jews; but their part will be played out the moment he enters into his kingdom. Then it will be necessary to sweep them away from his path, on which must be left no knot, no splinter.
5. Then will it be possible for us to say to the peoples of the world: "Give thanks to God and bow the knee before him who bears on his front the seal of the predestination of man, to which God himself has led his star that none other but Him might free us from all the before-mentioned forces and evils".

PROTOCOL No. 24
1. I pass now to the method of confirming the dynastic roots of King David to the last strata of the earth.
2. This confirmation will first and foremost be included in that which to this day has rested the force of conservatism by our learned elders of the conduct of the affairs of the world, in the directing of the education of thought of all humanity.
3. Certain members of the seed of David will prepare the kings and their heirs, selecting not by right of heritage but by eminent capacities, inducting them into the most secret mysteries of the political, into schemes of government, but providing always that none may come to knowledge of the secrets. The object of this mode of action is that all may know that government cannot be entrusted to those who have not been inducted into the secret places of its art ....
4. To these persons only will be taught the practical application of the aforenamed plans by comparison of the experiences of many centuries, all the observations on the politico-economic moves and social sciences - in a word, all the spirit of laws which have been unshakably established by nature herself for the regulation of the relations of humanity.
5. Direct heirs will often be set aside from ascending the throne if in their time of training they exhibit frivolity, softness and other qualities that are the ruin of authority, which render them incapable of governing and in themselves dangerous for kingly office.
6. Only those who are unconditionally capable for firm, even if it be to cruelty, direct rule will receive the reins of rule from our learned elders.
7. In case of falling sick with weakness of will or other form of incapacity. kings must by law hand over the reins of rule to new and capable hands.
8. The king's plan of action for the current moment, and all the more so for the future, will be unknown, even to those who are called his closest counselors.
KING OF THE JEWS
9. Only the king and the three who stood sponsor for him will know what is coming.
10. In the person of the king who with unbending will is master of himself and of humanity all will discern as it were fate with its mysterious ways. None will know what the king wishes to attain by his dispositions, and therefore none will dare to stand across an unknown path.
11. It is understood that the brain reservoir of the king must correspond in capacity to the plan of government it has to contain. It is for this reason that he will ascend the throne not otherwise than after examination of his mind by the aforesaid learned elders.
12. That the people may know and love their king, it is indispensable for him to converse in the market-places with his people. This ensures the necessary clinching of the two forces which are now divided one from another by us by the terror.
13. This terror was indispensable for us till the time comes for both these forces separately to fall under our influence.
14. The king of the Jews must not be at the mercy of his passions, and especially of sensuality: on no side of his character must he give brute instincts power over his mind. Sensuality worse than all else disorganizes the capacities of the mind and clearness of views, distracting the thoughts to the worst and most brutal side of human activity.
15. The prop of humanity in the person of the supreme lord of all the world of the holy seed of David must sacrifice to his people all personal inclinations.
