William Hague and Kishore Rao: Stop the destruction of Lhasa!
Cultural genocide. That is how the Dalai Lama described the Chinese government's policy in Tibet.
Lhasa, capital city of Tibet has stood on the top of the world for 1500 years but right now faces destruction to make way for a
"tourist city". Huge areas of the oldest part of Lhasa dating back to the 7th century are being torn down and rebuilt as a theme
park for tourists.
Amongst the areas at risk is the Barkhor, a procession around the Jokhang temple for pilgrims.
As the site of many protests, the old city of Lhasa is a symbol of Tibean resilience against the Chinese occupation.
In 2001 the Taliban blew up the 1500 year old Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan because they did not fit their political and
religious ideology. We cannot let another site of such cultural and historical importance be destroyed.
As Foreign Secretary, William Hague and as Director of UNESCO World Heritage Centre Kishore Rao have the position and
influence to stop China's willful destruction of the old city of Lhasa.
