Usage of underscore character

I guess I'm just getting old but what is up with the usage of all
the_underscore_characters? This is the first newsgroup where I have seen
them used. I use them a lot in programming but never in letters. There also
seems to be some hidden meaning to their usage that completely escapes me.

I use it as the equivalent of underlining in typing or
italics in printing.
