Maureen Dowd's romantic Obama

As if Barack Obama were not already "celebrity" enough, now Maureen
Dowd of the New York Times compares him to Fitzwilliam Darcy, the
romantic protagonist of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Pride and Prejudice. Get it? Groan:

In this political version of "Pride and Prejudice," the prejudice is
racial, with only 31 percent of white voters telling The New York
Times in a survey that they had a favorable opinion of Obama, compared
with 83 percent of blacks.

As if this were prima facie proof of white "prejudice" against Obama,
you see? Only because of his race do white voters hold him in low
esteem, Miss Dowd suggests, as if there were no other reason to doubt
the presidential aptitude of a man who, until 2005, had never
exercised any public office beyond the Illinois state legislature.

A presidential election is not a romance novel, nor should it be a
personal popularity contest. Now, like many other liberals, Miss Dowd
wants to turn the election into a referendum on race, so that Obama's
election would be the triumph of MLK's "dream," while Obama's defeat
would symbolically ratify what liberals have always believed:
Americans are a bunch of dimwitted reactionary bigots.

What Miss Dowd and other liberals should ask themselves is whether the
much-noted "resistance" to Obama -- his inability to break open a
major lead in the polls, no matter how many tongue-baths he receives
from fawning enthusiasts in the media -- might actually be voters'
reluctance to playing along with this game.

Ordinary Americans are smart enough to perceive that the elites are
demanding that they vote for Obama to prove they're not racists. But
the voters don't feel they have to prove any such thing, and they
resent like hell the suggestion that they do have to prove it

Does this mean that I should vote for McCain because he is one of my
generation and if I don't it will mean that my generation (those of us born
in the 1930s) will never have a chance to have a president like every other
generation has? Ageism should not be part of my thinking, so I should do my
part?

"The New Hampshire debate incident in which Obama condescendingly said, "You're
likable enough, Hillary," was reminiscent of that early scene in "Pride and
Prejudice" when Darcy coldly refuses to dance with Elizabeth Bennet, noting,
"She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me." And much else in
the same vein. It's not a favourable comparison but then the blogs that
peejay inhabits are much like him - thick as pig shit.

That statement is racist and prejudiced bullshit.

No-one deserves to be criticised on a racist, sexist, or whateverist basis.
No-one deserves an automatic free pass on them either.

Some who criticise Obama are racists. If the criticism is racially based it
is racist. Obama is relatively inexperienced (altho'compared to McCain who
isn't). Is that statement racist or agist?

If I crticise Obama am I automatically therefore a racist, criticise
Hillary - sexist. McCain - agist, Nixon - communist, Kennedy - anti
Catholic, Ike - WASPist? ... it's all bullshit.

Are only pre-retirement age WASP males available for crticism?

The main reason I despise and reject racism, sexism, etc. and especially
political correctness is because it allows individuals an easy out. Any
criticism of any individual can be shrugged of by them as merely an attack
on the group ie biased and therefore not worthy of consideration.
If someone is criticised for being inaccurate, lazy or inattentive they can
convince themselves it is only because of racism, sexism or anti
whateverism instead of checking to see if the accusation is true.

Good reasons to despise it. But it's quite likely this being a free
country, that people do have preferences and do discriminate.
Hopefully, they can put that aside to make a good decision at the poll.

POD has to lie quite a bit, pandering to the Rovian GOP, trying
to make a silk purse out of GWBush or John McCain, but POD is a
determined, if stupid, liar.
But of course, out there in the real world, there's an actual
New York Times newspaper, which POD obviously hasn't heard about.
This is the New York Times' reporting of Obama vs. McCain voter
acceptance:

Poll Shows Obama Leading McCain in New York
By Sewell Chan

Senator Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee,
has pulled even among white voters in New York State with Senator John
McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, and now has a commanding
overall lead over Mr. McCain, 50 percent to 36 percent, according to a
Quinnipiac University poll released on Wednesday. The survey suggests
that New York remains a securely blue state, notwithstanding
disappointment over the defeat of its home state senator, Hillary
Rodham Clinton, by Mr. Obama in the Democratic nominating contests.

Mr. Obama, of Illinois, received 42 percent of white votes in the
poll, compared with 43 percent for Mr. McCain, of Arizona. Black
voters backed Mr. Obama, 87 percent to 6 percent, as did voters under
age 45, 59 percent to 29 percent. Mr. Obama held similar, if smaller,
majorities among voters over age 45 (45 percent to 40 percent), men
(45 percent to 40 percent) and women (53 percent to 32 percent).

The last Quinnipiac poll, conducted in April when Senator Clinton was
still in the race, found a lead of only 47 percent to 39 percent in a
hypothetical Obama-McCain matchup. In that survey, white voters backed
Mr. McCain, 48 percent to 38 percent, over Mr. Obama.

The new poll was conducted June 3-8 among 1,388 New York State voters.
The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Most New York State Democrats in the new survey said that Mr. Obama
should pick Mrs. Clinton as his running mate (53 percent to 35
percent), while Republican voters resoundingly opposed the idea (62
percent to 27 percent), as did most independent voters (53 percent to
41 percent).

“Our favorite daughter, Senator Hillary Clinton, won’t be on top of
the ballot, but New York is still solidly blue,” Maurice Carroll,
director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute and a former
Times reporter, said in a statement. “Senator Barack Obama wins in a
walk. He pulls even with Senator John McCain among white voters. And
he mesmerizes the young. In the 18-to-44 age bracket, he blows McCain
away.”

Mr. Obama scored higher than Mr. McCain in terms of favorability. A
larger majority agreed that Mr. Obama cared about their needs and
problems than Mr. McCain did. Overwhelming majorities said that Mr.
McCain’s age (70 percent) and Mr. Obama’s race (85 percent) would not
affect their decision.

“You have to be careful when you ask about prejudices,” Mr. Carroll
said. “Do people tell the truth? Still, New Yorkers tell us, heavily,
they’re not prejudiced because of McCain’s age, and, overwhelmingly,
they’re not prejudiced because of Obama’s race.”

New Yorkers listed the economy as the single most important issue in
the presidential race, followed by the war in Iraq and health care.

More than three-quarters of the respondents — 76 percent — described
the state’s economy as “not so good” or “poor.” That included 84
percent of upstate voters, 66 percent of New York City voters and 75
percent of suburban voters.

An identical proportion — again, 75 percent — disapproved of President
Bush’s job performance. Even Republicans were split on the question,
47 percent to 47 percent; 20 percent of those surveyed said they
approved of the job Mr. Bush was doing.

Check out the New York Times site. That is the latest comparison
article they published.
To answer your question, in the two months I was away, and in the
places I get reliable information from, more and more of the
electorate woke up and realized that Bush and the Saudi don't
necessarily have to run the U.S.... because they're not good at it.
