Detransitioner sues American Academy of Pediatrics for medical malpractice in historic lawsuit

Isabelle Ayala, a 21-year-old biological female, is suing the American
Academy of Pediatrics and her healthcare providers, alleging civil
conspiracy, fraud, and medical malpractice in pressuring her into
undergoing a gender transition when she was a teenager.

This legal challenge is a first-of-its-kind lawsuit in the nation from a
detransitioner to name the AAP.

Ayala alleges the AAP published and disseminated a fraudulent 2018 “policy
statement” that has been perceived by many as an authoritative guide by
medical professionals for endorsing the “affirmative model” for gender
dysphoria.

The lawsuit that was filed on Monday claims that the policy lacked
sufficient evidence and used misleading and fraudulent citations to
support its conclusions and recommendations. She claims the policy should
not have been used as a guide for treatment of gender-confused children
across the country.

Some of the doctors listed in her lawsuit include Dr. Jason Rafferty, who
authored the 2018 AAP policy statement and has been one of the biggest
advocates of gender-affirming hormones, and Dr. Michelle Forcier, who
recommended Ayala testosterone injections after only one meeting.

When Ayala was 14 years old, she suffered from numerous mental health
conditions, including ADHD and PTSD from a previous sexual assault, and
was coping with her parents' marital separation, along with the social
isolation and transition of moving to a new state from Florida to Rhode
Island with her father and his new girlfriend.

She then discovered the transgender community online and explored a gender
transition. After one meeting, Dr. Rafferty encouraged testosterone
injections for her gender transition. Her mother refused consent, but then
the doctor's team pressured her mother into accepting the transition by
allegedly suggesting that her child would commit suicide if she did not
give in.

Ayala claims her doctors were “testing” the “radical new approach on
patients like her.”

The 2018 AAP model policy used by the doctors is listed in the lawsuit,
and she says it “included immediate, no-questions-asked ‘affirming’ of a
child’s desired gender and quickly placing them on a conveyor belt of
life-altering puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and/or experimental
surgeries.”

When Ayala moved back to Florida and decided to go off of hormone
treatment, she discovered irreversible damage and problems including
vaginal atrophy, excess facial and body hair, compromised bone structure,
and an autoimmune disease which have only further affected her mental
health.

Numerous other detransitioners are now suing their healthcare
professionals and were recently featured in the multipart documentary
series Identity Crisis produced by the Independent Women's Forum.
