with another friend. They went to a buffet style restaurant, had
finished eating and were sitting there chatting.
A black lady came in, went through the line and picked a table about
mid-way the dining area. My friend said they didn't pay any particular
attention to her, just noticed where she sat because she walked past
them. The woman then said loudly, to no one...and everyone, I guess,
"Hey, anybody want to talk about Obama?" My friend said it got so
quiet that you could've heard a pin drop and then a black man a few
booths away stood up and raised his fists in the air and started
chanting Obama, Obama, Obama and the woman joined in.
My friend and her friend left...fast, so I don't know what happened.
Nothing, probably. But this is just one incident in one small town.
What's going on around the country in all the other cities? I myself
have encountered extreme insolence and very surly attitudes in our
tiny town.
So how does a person handle this kind of antagonism? I'm already
heartsick about what is happening to our country. But some folks are
more than heartsick, they are p.o.'d and will take this kind of thing
as a personal insult.
I can (kind of) understand the racial pride thing because it makes me
proud and humbled to vote knowing what the women who went before me
sacrificed so that I have the privilege. But I don't get the
deliberate bating and insolent behavior."

to replace the labor pool in construction and custodial jobs. But now that
their children are going to our schools, and emergency rooms , and don't

Tell you what: We'll throw you and all of your decendants into
slavery
for a few hundred years, use your best-looking daughters for sex toys
and the ugly ones for mules, whip your sons into properly servile
attitudes, castrate the ones who have an attitude, forbid you your
own
religion and teach you ours that says you're an inferior animal and
that God *wants* you in slavery, and use anyone who objects to the
whole arraingement as targets, or, better yet, as object lessons that
our sadists can publicly torture to death for being "uppity".
Then after "freedom" arrives, we'll continue the same treatment for
another hundred and fifty years or until someone of *your* race is
finally elected to the highest office in the land.
Finally, after having gone through all that, get back to us on how

feel about "deliberate baiting and insolent behavior".

brothers sold them into slavery. And slavery had been around for
thousands of years before the first black man set foot in America.
You want to blame somebody for slavery, blame your black African

From a European view point, American socialist politicians seem about
as left wing as Margaret Thatcher. Both of your main parties are
basically democratic capitalists. Obama appears to be a US leader, the
rest of the world may be able to take a little more seriously than

We can only hope that the (shrinking) right wing of the Democrat party
will help keep him in line. What is needed is for some economic hard
times to wake up all those union workers so they figure out that
Obama's dream of an American USSR will not create the "envy of the
world" anymore than the original one did. If Union workers speak,
Democrats will have to listen.

Second, we have no way of knowing who was shooting his mouth off
first.. we only have you and your friends word for that.
'chatting' about what? Was their chat appropriate? We don't know. You
didn't say.
I've been in situations where people were saying things that would
tick anyone off.. blithely and without hesitation.. and then were
suprised and even offended at the reaction they got.
I have just as easy a time imagining that having happened first, maybe
easier, than I do beleiving your story as told.
Lastly, expect it. Expect some folk, black and white, to do things
that are not consistent with racial harmony, good
dialogue, or even decent public behavior.. not to mention being a bit
aggressive, etc.
As someone pointed out, the angst, the anger, that's been built into
society, and I don't have to distinguish between races here-many many
white people as well as others are just as ticked off at racism, is
built into real persons. Individuals.
When someone calls me a mick, being irish, I feel no sting. That's
just not true for people of color. And it will be a long time before
it is true. But it will be true. I am sure of that.
He's our president. remember when bush got elected and so many dems

Almost every time in my life when I've had to deal with an angry black
person, singling them out for this example only,
I've seen either a person who's working out some part of the suffering
they've been subjected to.. or a person who's
taking advantage personally.
I feel connected to both.

but I feel sure that behind your concerns here, you have a religious
belief. In who? In what?

Now you tell us.. is there enough to your story for anyone to even
suggest that the person(s) you describe are all right on one side of
this or the other?
Or is it just a rant, born of fear, probably prejudice, but obviously
a rant born out of lack of intellectual consideration, as I believe
nearly every post in reply has shown this story to be full of holes.
Some years ago I stopped in a pawn shop to buy a used tape deck..
a large sweaty rather ugly black man dressed hip hoppy and covered in
bling..yeah. stereotypical!.. perusing the gold chain selection, began
for no apparent reason to make fun of my 8 year old son..
he looks like a little girl with that long hair.. he looks like a
little girl with that brightly colored parka.
Here's what I told my son when we left.
some people are unhappy. white ones, too.
Compare him to your teacher
The wonderful Mrs. Brown,
(black elementary school teacher in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.),
and tell me, my son, which one do you think is representative of black
folk.
Bet I don't have to ask anyone how they feel now about that situation,
and I bet I don't have to tell you what my sons answer was.
At age 8 he didn't have to think about it much. Because the contrast
was so unbelievably wide between that mans actions and his teachers.
not to mention every other black person he'd ever met.
I know a white guy who seems to me from one incident to be a total
jerk.
Anyone want to tell me what's happening to the country based on that?
Or suggest white folk are a problem?
What can we do about these crackers? Perhaps they should have stayed
in Europe.
This is the sort of thing that characterises lack of thought. You give
every impression that you simply hate/fear black folk.
You give me the impression that the jackasses of the country who've
been able to do far worse to everyone around them are somehow to be
forgotten, and forgiven, and that actions have no consequences, and
that dealing with all of that is somehow best done by being shallow.

higest rates of unemployment, drug addiction, infant mortality, the
worst schools, the oldest textbooks, yadda yadda yadda.
