Surviving on Food Stamps Alone

As the Great Recession wears on, Food Stamps use is already at a record high
and within those numbers is a fast-growing subcategory of recipients-six
million Americans so far-who have no actual cash income. The swift increase
has been only partially monitored by authorities and policymakers, and is
complicated to track as it includes some recipients that may have found
employment or others receiving under-the-table forms of income. Still, "the
Food Stamps program is being asked to do too much" according to the
president of the Food Research and Action Center. The increase is drawing
conservative criticism, too, and Rep. John Linder (R-GA) said, "This is
craziness. We're at risk of creating an entire class of people, a subset of
people, just comfortable getting by living off the government." Many
recipients held steady jobs pre-recession, however, and one woman said, "I
went from making $180,000 to relying on Food Stamps. Without that government
program, I wouldn't be able to feed my children."

In most of the USA, you can't qualify for food stamps without losing
everything first. It's ridiculous. These programs should help so you don't
lose everything. What did anyone expect? Social assistance had to go up,
when Bush's jobs market went down. I've been hearing that unemployment will
remain at a level of 8% for years. How do people live? Why didn't anyone
worry about this as those enormous salaries continue to go to CEO's?

Depends on WHERE you live. Believe me, people here in North Carolina
routinely live middle-class on incomes that wouldn't keep them even in
the slum in New York City or Los Angeles. Housing costs make the big
difference.

Bullshit - as damn few people in North Carolina are executives. What
makes the difference is that here in North Carolina, you really can
buy a middle-class single-family house in a middle-class neighborhood
for $138,000; you can't buy a middle-class house in a middle-class
neighborhood in New York City or Los Angeles for triple that. Why
else do you think so many of those working middle-class jobs in
Manhattan commute from Pennsylvania?

Learn to read. He didn't say that he had next to nothing to live on. He
said he raised a family on minimum wage. That is much easier to do in
many parts of the country than it is in an urban area like LA, Detroit,
or NYC.

Let's see if I have this healthcare thingy right. Congress is to pass
a plan written by a committee whose head has said he doesn't understand
it, passed by a Congress that hasn't read it, signed by a president who
hasn't read it, with funding administered by a Treasury chief who didn't
pay his taxes because he didn't understand TurboTax, overseen by an obese
Surgeon General and financed by a country that's nearly broke.

ANYWHERE you try to raise a family (I consider that 2 or more kids) on
minimum wage you are well below the poverty level. You DON'T live
well. I live in Alabama and we see couples trying to survive on one
minimum wage pay check and they can't do it without living in a rat
hole, have no health insurance and drive a care ready to break down at
any time.

GDP growth is released, the recession will officially be over. Most, if
not all, jobs will have been recovered by 2012 and Obama will win in a
