I did something this morning I hadn't done since 1976. I voted for a
Democrat for President.

I did something else I had never done. I voted for every Democrat on
the ballot. There were four races where Republicans ran unopposed. I
simple left those spots vacant. I refused to cast one fucking vote for
a Republican, even when it didn't matter.

If you think I am a raging liberal, think again. I am a Goldwater
conservative. I voted for Reagan and for Bush 41. I was delighted when
the Republicans took over Congress in 1994. Since that time they have
done everything they could to disappoint me. The proved to me that the
were not against big government. They were only against big Democrat
government. Big Republican government is apparently OK with them.
Since 2000, they grew the federal government more than any
adminsitration since LBJ. The turned a budget surplus into record
defecits. They doubled the size of the federal debt in just 8 years.
They started a war of choice in Iraq which has cost the lives of over
4000 of our servicemen and maimed many more, not to mention the many
thousands of innocent Iraqis who also have been killed. They made a
mockery of the Bill of Rights with the passage of The Patriot Act,
probably the worst name for any piece of legislation that was ever
enacted. The last straw was the nomination of John McCain, the man who
led the effort to pass McCain-Feingold, which gutted the First
Amendment and which the worst President in our nation's history signed
into law. Apparently he had his fingers crossed when he vowed to
"...preserve, protect, and, defend the Constitution of the United
States." My disgust with the GOP has become complete and total in the
closing weeks of the campaign with their increasingly despicable
campaign tactics. First McCain and Palin's whiny rants about Bill
Ayers, Joe the wannabe plumber, socialism, yada, yada, yada. Then came
the scare tactic mailings from the RNC that began turning up every
other day in my mailbox. Their desperation reached a new low with the
eleventh hour TV spots about Reverend Wright. The GOP became the party
of the neocons and now it is becoming the party of the neandercons.

None of this was what I signed on for when I became a Republican in
the Reagan days but it has everything to do with why I am no longer a
Republican. I didn't abandon the Republican Party, they abandoned me.
And betrayed me as well. I had voted for the Libertarian candidate the
last three Presidential elections but this time, that action would not
have conveyed my total disgust with what the GOP has become. I felt it
was my duty to do all I could to contribute to the total asskicking of
the GOP which I am looking forward to tonight.

For those still remaining in the GOP who feel they can just dismiss me
as being one vote, it should be apparent to you by now that I am just
one of millions of voters who have become disenchanted with the party
and that is the reason you have become a minority party and an
increasingly irrelevant one at that. When Bill Buckley's son and Barry
Goldwater's grandchildren endorsed Barack Obama, that should have
sounded the alarm but apparently the party has become deaf as well as
dumb. Tonight should serve as a wake up call for the Republicans. They
have two choices. They can reverse the direction the party has been
going for the past decade or they can hit the snooze button and allow
the Democrats to dominate the political landscape for the next several
decades.

to regret your rash and irrational actions.

You've got a lot of company out there! A good batch of the 40-50 age
professionals (I am 82) that I know turned to the Libertarian party a couple
of election cycles ago. I first voted in 1948. In that time I never missed a
national election, and only three times did I feel good about it.
Eisenhower, Goldwater and Reagan. All the rest, I was voting AGAINST
someone. This time, I was given the choice of two liberals.

I'm a little beyond the 40-50 demographic (57 later this month). I was
a professional (computer programmer). I was impressed with the
Libertarians from the day I first learned about them and their
principles. I voted for their candidate for the first time in 1996. I
thought Bob Dole was a good man but I knew he had no chance so I
decided to vote my beliefs. In 2000 and 2004 the choice was easy. I
never thought W represented the classic Goldwater conservative model
and I didn't trust him. He has spent the last 8 years confirming my
initial distrust. Unfortunately, he took the whole Republican Party
down the same road and many libertarian conservatives such as myself
were unwilling to follow them.

Not suprised that a neadercon like you would consider a Goldwater
conservative to be a liberal. Before he died, there were some who
thought Barry Goldwater himself had become a liberal. The truth is
that Goldwater held to the same principles throughout his life. My
core beliefs have changed little since the days I was voting for
Reagan and Bush 41. What has changed is what is considered to be a
conservative and we have the neocons to thank for that. But don't
believe me. Keep your head buried in the sand, or jammed up your ass.
Keep wondering why the Republican base continues to shrink and the
Republican Party becomes less and less relevant. More and more level
headed Republicans are abandoning the party that has abandoned them.
Some are going over to the Democrats. Some are voting for the
Libertarian or Constitutional parties because they can't bring
themselves to cast their vote for the Democrat. In any case, it is
votes the Republicans are losing that they can't afford to lose. If
the continue in the direction they have been going in the last 8
years, they are destined to go the way of the Whigs. And I won't give
a shit.

to offset his likely loss in OH. He failed to do that which is why his

It's one thing to be pissed about what's happened to the Republican
leadership over the last few years (I am) but it appears you are
willing to paint all Republicans with the same brush. Did you check
out each of these candidates to insure what you're doing is the right
thing?

There is no doubt I did the right thing this morning. The Republican
Party needs to be bitch slapped. It needs to be destroyed and rebuilt
from the ground up. The leadership needs to be replaced. The GOP needs
a whole new lineup. That will only happen with a complete destruction
of the party in its current form. I wanted to see the Republican Party
go down in flames. I want it to crash and burn. All indications are
that is exactly what will happen. It is my fervent hope that from the
ashes of the wreckage a new Republican Party will be born. I want to
see the party return to the principles of Goldwater and Reagan.
Limited government and individual liberty. I want to see the social
conservatives, the neocons and the neandercons sent to their room.
They need to be told to shut the fuck up, quit trying to run the
party, and let the libertarian conservatives take the reins of the
party. Reagan established a coalition with these groups but they were
not in charge. If the Republicans are going to return to significance,
that relationship needs to be re-established.

I am not a cradle Republican. I am a born again libertarian
conservative who saw the Republican Party as a vehichle, not an entity
that needed to be preserved for its own sake. The party has been
hijacked by those who think it is enough that acandidate has an "R"
next to his name without caring whether they held to the principles
the party had under Reagan. The ball is in the GOP's court now. They
must decide whether they want to be the party of Goldwater/Reagan or
the party of Bush/Cheney/Rove and now Palin. Tonight's results should
indicate which is the more prudent path.
