Marine acquisition officials are considering a high-capacity magazine that could hold 50 or 100 rounds and fit numerous 5.56mm weapons, raising questions about the Corps plans to move forward with development of the controversial infantry
automatic rifle.
Marine Corps Systems Command, based at Quantico, Va., is seeking potential commercial sources for a high capacity magazine for use in a semi or fully automatic rifle,

How much would such a mag, loaded, WEIGH? The 75 round drums for
AK-47s weigh 4 lbs. loaded, each.
Somehow I just don't see this for M4 or M16 rifles!

While it might be bulky twice the weight of a 30 rounder isn't that bad. I
would think the issue would be carrying it. I was under theimpression
standard load out was 210 rds, 1 mag in the gun and 6 in pouches. Does this
mean they are going to carry the same amount in fewer mags or more mags for
more rounds?6 50 rd mags can't be that much harder to carry than 6 30s. And
that would bump standard load to 350 from 210.
Only problem I have is without the enforced reloading I suspect they may just
run out a few seconds later than they are now. All (or most of what I've
seen) of the combat footage from Iraq and Afghanistan shows everyone on rock
and roll.
I think the deeper problem is that 5.56 is meant to wound, the classic wound
a soldier and 2 or 4 of his buddies need to evac him, his wounds are
demoralzing, blah, blah. I think that works better when both sides are
uniformed and trying to comply with a basic set of rules and soldiers
actually worry about going home to thier woves and children.
I'm not sure that obtains with the mutts we are fighting now. Solid one hit
kills even behind cover would seem more important. Just giving them more
bullets doesn't help if the bullets are getting where they are wanted, which
full auto is good at, suppressing fire is one thing, killing the bad guy ios
another. Or if they are deflected by intervening materials.
I'd love to see data on # of rounds expended vs casualties inflicted and then
work the math to determine how much more effective really, is it to just let
them fire 20 more rounds before a mag change. Doesn't seem intuitively to
solve the given problem.
