Plotinos (or Plotinus) was the founder of neo-platonism. Now, there is
an obvious similarity between the names "Plotinos" and "Platon" (i.e.
Plato). Is this a coincidence, or did Plotinos change his name (from
something else) to be similar to "Platon"? Does anyone know?

It seems regarded as the name he was born with. His student Porphyry
provided much of the sketchy biographical info about him. But since
Plotinus was taciturn about the earliest details of his life, there
could be a slight spectre of curiosity hanging overhead, if such a
question had ever warranted being asked by scholars.
