Are you kidding? I'd vote for Nixon. That's how bad it is.
Of course I did not vote for him at the time because by the
standards of THAT day, he was far to the right.
Once upon a time there was a social consensus in the US. It
was forged during the Great Depression and lasted a long time.
But in time folks forget what hard times are like, especially
since even then many people held jobs and didn't suffer much
at all.
