night, was at the freezing point, and today's high was in single
digits C.

Reminds me of a story Mark Twain recounted from the then-recent troubles in
Ireland.
The authorities decided that there was a good deal too much civic disorder
stemming from various incitements, and it was time to stop the incitements.
Hence, any public sloganeering that encouraged hostilities between the
religions was banned. Shouting "To Hell with the (Protestants|Catholics)!"
for instance, was punishable by a fine of 10 shillings or something.
Enforcement was encouraged by giving the arresting officer a cut of the

they had to take action to avoid being overrun.
So this guy near Geneva built a minaret to put on top of his chimney.
Illuminated it at night with 1,000 watts of floodlights to make it clearly
visible from the highway between Geneva and Lausanne. Not a Muslim or
anything, of course; just pissed off.
The police came by, looked at it, and went away. He has gots lots of nasty
letters. He has now put up more spotlights.
