Evolution-denier slams La Sierra University on biology education
November 21, 4:45 PM Riverside Atheism Examiner Trudy Sassaman

http://www.examiner.com/x-28950-Riverside-Atheism-Examiner~y2009m11d21-La-Sierra-University-slammed-on-evolution-teaching

A leading critic of La Sierra University’s teaching of evolution
accuses the Seventh Day Adventist school of “bordering on outright
lies” in its campaign to convince people that its biology department
adheres to the literal account of creation described in the Bible.

“La Sierra can spin their biology department anyway they want, but
they can’t cover up the fact their biology professors are undermining
the church’s position on origins, said Beaumont resident Shane Hilde
on his website, EducateTruth.com

The board of trustees of the Seventh Day Adventist university last
week voted to reaffirm a commitment to Church’s biblical creation
viewpoint -- in essence that the God of the Bible created the world in
six 24-hour days thousands of years ago rather than billions. The
board also called for a study group to draw up a curriculum that
embraces a "thorough, balanced, and scientifically rigorous
affirmation of the Adventist Church's historic belief in a literal,
recent six-day creation. "

Although welcoming the call for the study group, Hilde noted that the
board did not address the question of whether professors would be
required to follow the new curriculum.

Hilde also takes issue with a La Sierra-produced publicity video
featuring fourth-year Biomedical Science Major, Ramona Bahnam of Simi
Valley. The video is posted on the university’s website.

When asked “How does the Biology program at La Sierra prepare you for
the future?” Brahnam responds:
“The way that they approach evolution is that this is how it is, this
is what it is, a theory, and you don’t have to believe it. But it’s
good to know about it so you can argue the creationist view. Because
if you’re ignorant about something, it’s really hard to argue the
opposite. So its just informative mainly."

Hilde, a La Sierra graduate, likens Bahnam's statement to those made
by others at the university, but he is not buying any of it: "This
statement could have packed a little more punch if she wasn’t talking
about a biology department that was completely converted to
evolutionism.”

Hilde cites a Inside Higher Education article in which Professor Gary
Bradley says he wasn’t going to present the theory of evolution only
to dismantle it for students. In the article, Bradley calls those who
believe God spoke things into existence only a few thousand years ago
the “lunatic fringe.”

More than 6,300 people have put their names on Hilde’s petition
expressing concern that theistic macroevolution is being treated as a
fact at La Sierra and other Adventist. universities.

“Theistic evolution” is the concept that religion is compatible with
scientific understanding about biological evolution. Wikipedia
describes the term as the view that: “God is the creator of the
material universe and (by consequence) all life within, and that
biological evolution is simply a natural process within that
creation.. .” The website, Truthnet.org, says some theistic
evolutionists bring God into the equation to relieve them of “the
nagging problem of the need for an intelligent cause."

Then Hilde's god will have to smite the faculty or the students must
throw rocks at them.
